The Olympic Games have officially been postponed to a date “not later than summer 2021” due to the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the whole world.
The IOC has confirmed the news in an official statement, confirming the inevitable outcome for the tournament set up to start on July 24 this year.
The Coronavirus pandemic is spreading over the world and is unlikely to be fully resolved by that date, forcing the postponement of the historic games..
The Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe confirmed the news after a phone call with IOC President Thomas Bach.
“I proposed to postpone the Olympic Games for a year and President Bach replied that he agrees 100 per cent,” he told reporters in Japan.
IOC then confirmed the decision by publishing an official statement reading: “In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community.”
