Wayne Rooney lands in Washington D.C. to meet with D.C. United officials

WASHINGTON — Wayne Rooney reportedly flew into Washington, D.C., Wednesday afternoon after weeks of speculation about the former Everton forward potentially signing with Major League Soccer side D.C. United.
Rooney is set to tour United’s new stadium, Audi Field, go through medical tests and meet with United executives, including managing general partner Jason Levien, according to a report from Steven Goff of the Washington Post. The former English national team captain arrived in the nation’s capital after a family vacation in Barbados.
D.C. United did not immediately respond to request for comment.
The club’s official Twitter account posted about ticket sales for the opening game at the new stadium July 14 moments after the latest news broke. The team is currently on the opposite coast preparing for a match against LAFC at 10 pm ET Saturday.
If an agreement with Rooney is reached, he could begin training immediately despite not being eligible to play in a match until the secondary transfer window opens July 10, according to the Washington Post article.
“[Rooney] is an attacking piece,” coach Ben Olsen said after a training session last week. “To me, I still view him as a attacking piece, but, again, he is not our player. When and if he ever is, I will let you know my plans with him.”
Rooney rumors have sparked plenty of intrigue in and around the soccer world for weeks. The whirlwind of Wayne included gossip outlets like TMZ following Olsen in the airport and the Daily Mail catching Rooney’s first meeting with United officials.
“That was a first. I suppose I won’t get caught off guard again. I will do my hair,” Olsen said last week. “I think the hyperbole of everything is just unbelievable and the lack of reality of just stepping back is hard to do right now for a lot of people.”
The buzz is a unique break in an otherwise quiet and, at times, frustrating few seasons for fans. United looks to build off a 3-1 win over San Jose Earthquakes going into LAFC’s brand new Banc of California stadium this week.
