Saitama: A ruthless Urawa Red Diamonds brushed aside 2014 continental champions Western Sydney Wanderers 6-1 at Saitama Stadium on Wednesday to cement a top-two place in Group F and with it a berth in the 2017 AFC Champions League Round of 16.
The 2007 winners opened the scoring after just 14 minutes when Takahiro Sekine curled the ball past Vedran Janjetovic, before Zlatan Ljubijankic added the Reds’ second shortly after. Tadanari Lee rounded out a dominant first-half with a tap in on the stroke of half-time
The Wanderers pulled one back with 25 minutes remaining through Japanese midfielder Jumpei Kusukami, but just when it looked like the Wanderers were getting back into the game Brazilian striker Rafael Silva came off the bench to score a quick-fire brace and set up the sixth goal for Shinzo Koroki to ensure the night finished on a high note for the home side.
The win means Urawa secure their place in the Round of 16, while Western Sydney are eliminated.
