Report: Arsenal and Tottenham told to pay £5.1m loan fee to sign Thomas Lemar

Atletico Madrid attacker Thomas Lemar is being linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal this month, and The Independent have claimed that the north London duo will need to include a huge loan fee to land the Frenchman.
Lemar, 24, has struggled since his £52.7million move to Atletico Madrid from AS Monaco, scoring just three goals in 64 league and cup appearances. He has fallen out of favour under Diego Simeone and is keen to leave Atleti in January.
Both Spurs and Arsenal have been linked with a move for the France international, while The Gunners almost landed Lemar before he chose Atletico Madrid. Now, they could finally get their man – but will have to pay through the nose to do so.
Indeed, Atleti are requiring a £5.1million loan fee just have him until the end of the season. Interested parties will also have to include a £51million permanent clause in the deal, if they want to consider landing Lemar beyond the end of the season.

TBR’s view – Is such an outlay worth spending on Lemar?

Analysing his current stats for Atletico, it goes without saying that Lemar would be a massive gamble. To score only three goals in 64 games – and lay on just six assists in that time – paying almost £60million combined is certainly a waste.
However, delving slightly deeper into his style of play, Lemar has been used as a wing-back at times by Simeone. He has a World Cup winners’ medal, and boasts plenty of pace and excitement with the ball at his feet.
If Spurs and Arsenal can convince Atleti to reduce their price tag for Lemar somewhat, then a good deal could be struck.
