Milan have been linked with an interest in Sao Paulo ace Igor Liziero, with reports claiming talks have been held over a potential signing this summer.
As noted by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 22-year-old is said to have been the subject of talks between the Rossoneri and Sao Paulo, while it’s noted that he has a €50m release clause in his current contract.
Our recent acquisitions from Brazil haven’t been particularly successful with both Lucas Paqueta and Leo Duarte struggling to cement their respective places in our starting XI, and so it’s hoped that if a swoop does materialise, the results are more positive.
However, time will tell if an agreement can even be reached between the relevant parties as it seems as though it’s still some way off from becoming a done deal.
Liziero scouting profile
So, how good is Liziero? After making his first-team debut in 2018, he has gone on to make 76 appearances while he is currently involved at U17s level for Brazil.
The 22-year-old can be deployed in both midfield and at left-back, and so that versatility will no doubt come in his favour when considering a potential swoop given our lack of quality depth arguably in both positions.
As the video below shows, he boasts impressive technical quality both in terms of his skill on the ball and his distribution as he can certainly pick out a pass with that classy left-foot, while he has the physicality and tenacity needed in that deeper-lying midfield role to offer defensive protection to his backline as he can break play up and reads the game well.
That said, he’s arguably quite similar to Ismael Bennacer in that sense as the pair both prefer to occupy the same space on the pitch, and given both are left-footed, it raises the question as to whether they could co-exist and provide the necessary balance in midfield or if perhaps it’s a move to add competition and depth in the squad moving forward.
It seems as though that type of player is high on Milan’s list though when you consider it has been widely speculated that the likes of Marc Roca and Teun Koopmeiners are of interest to us this summer, while alternatively, it could be about identifying the ideal partner for Bennacer and looking to fill Franck Kessie’s role instead.
As with any player from Brazil, it’s a gamble in that it remains to be seen if Liziero would successfully adapt and adjust to Italian football, but as noted above, he has the necessary base characteristics and attributes to seemingly make a positive impression if he were to join us.
Add to the mix his versatility to play at left-back too, and it could be a decent move if the price is right. With that €50m release clause though, Milan will surely need to negotiate that down significantly if they wish to snap him up this summer.
