According to Sky Sports Germany, Bayern Munich star David Alaba has hired Israeli super-agent Pini Zahavi. Up until now, he’s been represented by his father George. With the Austrian yet to sign a new long term deal with the Bavarians, hiring Zahavi could be an attempt by the player to secure a better wage deal going forward. Or, more worryingly, it could be an attempt to move elsewhere.
The Bayern bosses have had dealings with Zahavi before. Robert Lewandowski hired the agent in 2018 when he was desperately pushing for a move to Real Madrid. The club held firm, and Zahavi was unable to orchestrate a transfer — Lewy ended up negotiating a new contract.
However, in that instance, Lewandowski still had many years left on his contract, which worked in Bayern’s favor. Hoeness and Rummenigge were able to simply stonewall all of Zahavi’s attempts to negotiate. As of right now, David Alaba doesn’t have that issue. The Austrian, alongside Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer, and Thiago Alcantara, is one of several key players whose contracts enter their final year this summer. In short, Alaba has far more leverage than Lewy ever did, and probably more high-profile suitors as well.
Zahavi, meanwhile, is known for orchestrating deals. His big scalp was pulling off the transfer of Neymar from Barcelona to PSG in 2017. With Alaba speaking candidly about potentially leaving the club someday, especially mentioning his love of Arsenal, Bayern fans have plenty of reason to worry. Alaba was the club’s last truly successful academy player — it would be a shame if he left Munich at the peak of his career.
Update
According to Bild (paywalled), George Alaba and Pini Zahavi are still in talks about collaborating. So, contrary to Sky Sports’ report, Bild says that Zahavi isn’t yet confirmed as Alaba’s new agent. They also claim that Real Madrid and Barcelona are among those teams interested in buying Alaba, which isn’t a surprise.
