Roma 4-2 Liverpool: Player Ratings

Liverpool reached the Champions League final despite a dramatic 4-2 defeat to Roma on Wednesday night, with 11 Reds heroes doing the club proud at Stadio Olimpico.

Roma 4-2 Liverpool

Champions League Semi-Final Second Leg, Stadio Olimpico
May 2, 2018
Goals: Mane 9′, Wijnaldum 25′; Milner OG 15′, Dzeko 52′, Nainggolan 86′ & 90′ pen
Loris Karius (out of 10) – 7
Karius looks transformed after such an iffy to start to his Liverpool career, and this was a performance that summed up his change in fortunes.
The German was commanding from crosses all evening, making good catches and convincing punches, and he now looks as though he belongs in this team. Brought Edin Dzeko down but the striker was offside, fortunately.
Forget about bringing in a replacement this summer – he’s the real deal.
After being used in a midfield role against Stoke City, Alexander-Arnold returned to his regular right-back berth against Roma.
The teenager was given a really tough time of things by the tricky Stephan El Shaarawy, and in the second-half he fell apart a little under pressure, and was culpable for Dzeko’s strike.
He stuck at his job doggedly, even though he looked shaky – this has still been a coming-of-age campaign.
Dejan Lovren – 5.5
Having been rested at the weekend, Lovren came back into the side at Stadio Olimpico, but he never cut a reliable figure at the back.
His clearance that hit James Milner and flew into the net was not good enough, and a needless foul on El Shaarawy epitimised his rashness.
That being said, he was strong in the air up against the giant Dzeko, which he deserves a lot of credit for. Must be improved upon in the summer.

Virgil van Dijk – 8.5
Liverpool’s record signing faced his biggest game yet for the Reds, and he was imperious at the heart of the Reds’ defence.
He brought a calm to proceedings while teammates looked nervous early on, and you always felt Liverpool were just about in control with him on the pitch.
Van Dijk is genuinely one of the world’s best centre-backs, and he excelled in Rome. Without him, the Reds may have crashed out.
After Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, Robertson has arguably been the Reds’ third-best player this season, and he was impressive yet again on Wednesday evening.
One magnificent run into the Roma penalty area so nearly led to Sadio Manescoring his second goal when the score was 1-1, and he looked an assured figure throughout.
The Scot allowed Alessandro Florenzi a bit too much time on occasions, but that is being ultra-picky.
The skipper was once again deployed in front of the back-four, and it was a good, if slightly messy, showing from him.
He battled endlessly in the middle of the park, biting into tackles and showing his physical edge, but he looked rushed on the ball often. Had a big final 20 minutes when others were suffering.
The positives outweighed the negatives, without question.

Wijnaldum was outstanding in last Tuesday’s first leg at Anfield, and he carried on his much-improved form on a memorable night personally.
The 27-year-old was his solid, unspectacular self for much of the first-half, before heading home Liverpool’s second of the night – his first ever away goal for the Reds.
Jurgen Klopp needed Wijnaldum to step up in the absence of the injured Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and he has done just that.
James Milner – 7.5
Milner has been superb of late, enjoying the best spell of his Liverpool career, and he shone bright and used all his vast experience.
The 32-year-old rarely put a foot wrong, using the ball well and working his socks off, and he has been such a big performer in the Champions League.
He could do nothing about his own goal – after that unfortunate penalty that went against him last week, he must feel somewhat cursed.
All eyes were on the newly-crowned PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year, but this night didn’t belong to him for once.
He looked very dangerous every time Liverpool broke at pace, but his magic touch in front of goal evaded him, and Sadio Mane and Roberto were more influential.
He was still perfectly adequate, even though he got caught offside approximately 742 times.
Sadio Mane – 8.5 (Man of the Match)
Mane missed the stalemate against Stoke through injury, but he returned to the left-side of the front-three for the trip to Rome.
The Senegalese was Liverpool’s star man, and in a season in which Salah and Firmino have made more headlines, it was nice to see him thriving as the main man.
He eased the nerves with a clinical early finish – his 19th goal of a supposedly ‘below-par’ season – and some of his speed, movement and trickery was a joy to watch.
Leading the line in his own unique way, Firmino was wonderful in arguably the biggest game of his career, proving to be everywhere for his side.
His selflessness, creativity and intelligence make him a dream for Jurgen Klopp, and for all the brilliance of Salah, he is the first name on the team-sheet.
He did grow sloppy in the second-half, however, losing the ball cheaply by his sides, and he look exhausted as the minutes ticked by.
Provided an assist for Mane.

Starting XI Average Rating: 7.13

Manager

Jurgen Klopp – 8
Less than three years as manager and Jurgen Klopp has inspired Liverpool to a Champions League final. What a man.
You couldn’t fault his starting lineup or his tactics at Stadio Olimpico, and it was individual errors that were costly on the night.
It was strange that no substitutions were made earlier, however, with players tiring and Trent Alexander-Arnold, in particular, struggling.
Come on Jurgen, let’s end your final curse in Kiev later this month!

Liverpool Football Club are heading to the Champions League final after beating AS Roma 7-6 on aggregate. Here are the Liverpool player ratings v Roma.

The Champions League final. Saturday 26th May. Book it in. We’re going! Liverpool got the result they needed, despite some late drama, losing 4-2 on the night but winning 7-6 on aggregate to send the Reds to Kiev later in the month.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp made four changes to the side from the goalless draw against Stoke on Saturday. Alberto Moreno and Ragnar Klavan made way in defense for Andrew Robertson and Dejan Lovren.
James Milner replaced Joe Gomez with Trent Alexander-Arnold shifting to right back with Milner coming into the middle. Sadio Mane took Danny Ings’ place in the front three.
Sadio Mane helped settle nerves with a first half goal. Roma equalized minutes later through a freaky James Milner own goal. A Gini Wijnaldum header gave Liverpool a four goal lead at half time. Three second half goals made for a nervy finish but the mountain was too high for Roma to climb.

Here are our Liverpool player ratings against AS Roma:

LORIS KARIUS

Goalkeeper,Liverpool

6

Some good punches and solid saves. Was very lucky not to concede a penalty when he came flying out and hit Dzeko. The lino had already flagged for offside but that decision looked suspect on replay. Not sure Karius could have saved Nainggolan’s late rasping shot but he could have dived to at least convince me that he knew it was there.

Liverpool Player Ratings: Defenders

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD

Right Back, Liverpool

6

A huge night for the youngster and he played like it was a bit too much for him. There was plenty of good stuff, some great passes. He was badly beaten for the Roma second goal after missing his interception. Made a great block in a goal mouth scramble but the replay showed it was actually a handball.

DEJAN LOVREN

Center Back, Liverpool

6

His attempted clearance that cannoned into the Liverpool net off James Milner’s head gave Roma hope when the early goal looked to end the tie. To be fair to the Croatian he got good contact on the ball and it was a fluke goal. More worrying were the long balls over his head and the bullying he received from Dzeko in the second half.

VIRGIL VAN DIJK

Center Back, Liverpool

8

Brilliant again. Dealt with every single thing that came near him. Clever little push on the defender for Wijnaldum’s goal. A mountain of human being. We never get to the final without this signing. An incredible transfer that has helped take us to our first Champions League final for 11 years.

ANDREW ROBERTSON

Left Back, Liverpool

8

Great delivery for Wijnaldum’s header. He was fearless again in attacking Roma’s right hand side and causing them huge problems. Ran past three Roma players early in the second half and was ready for the one-two with Salah but the Egyptian was offside. As good a left back as there is on the planet in 2018.

Liverpool Player Ratings: Midfield

JORDAN HENDERSON

Center Midfield, Liverpool

9

Did his job in the first half. Hassled and hustled and stopped the Roma midfield from getting a handle on the game. The Italians shifted formation to 424 after their second equalizer on the night. That meant Henderson and Milner were often bypassed as Roma looked for long balls over the top. Sat deep for the last 25 minutes and shut everything down.

JAMES MILNER

Center Midfield, Liverpool

7

Hugely unfortunate to be the scorer of a fluke own goal that gave Roma a glimmer of light. The most willing of the midfield three to get forward and found Firmino on one occasion only for the Brazilian to force a save from Alisson.

GGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

GINI WIJNALDUM

Center Midfield, Liverpool

8

Never scored an away goal. Until tonight. Gini was excellent in midfield but got that precious first away goal from a corner, beating the offside to nod it in. It has been a point of humor for some and concern from others. Everyone will remember when Wijnaldum threw away that unwanted record.

Liverpool Player Ratings: Forwards

MOHAMED SALAH

Right Forward, Liverpool

6

Amazingly booed whenever he got the ball. Two excellent season in Rome and refusing to celebrate his goals against them is apparently not enough to be remain friends. Tried hard all night to make something happen but nothing came off. Rare off night for the Egyptian King.

ROBERTO FIRMINO

Center Forward, Liverpool

8

Another assist and another huge performance for Firmino who recently signed a new deal to become the club’s highest paid player. He was everywhere in the first half; defending in the full back positions and in front of the back four. Never seen a player enjoy ever element of playing football with such enthusiasm.

SADIO MANE

Left Forward, Liverpool

9

He was heavily involved early and had a penalty shout turned away. Minutes later he was on the score sheet. Firmino teed him up and Mane was happy to take it on his left foot and finished with confidence. The second half was all about his effort as he closed and defended like a beast. Made way for Ragnar Klavan late on. Man-of-the-Match

Substitutes

Ragnar Klavan – 4

Mandatory late sub by Jurgen Klopp to bring on an extra center back. Once again Liverpool concede after they do that. I hate that tactic. Gave away a handball for the late penalty. Awful.
Came on for Firmino. Picked up a yellow card two minutes later.

Nathaniel Clyne – 6

Brought on for Alexander-Arnold to help wind the clock down in injury time.
