The name Celtic is known worldwide. From the Lisbon Lions to the world famous Hoops. From Jimmy Johnstone to Henrik Larsson. The Celtic Way statues are testament to our on field successes. But, there is one that gives us an untouchable back story.
Brother Walfrid sits proudly in front of his creation. A creation that has grown beyond his expectations. A club that was founded to feed the children in St Mary’s Parish Calton. A club that recently has got back in touch with his roots.
We attended the Celtic FC Foundation Football For Good Event the other evening. This event showcased the work that the numerous projects that the Foundation undertakes and the change it has made to the participants lives.
The Foundation CEO, Tony Hamilton, said: “There is nothing ordinary about the award winning Celtic support” when speaking about the contribution the supporters made to the Foundation last season. He continued: “The Celtic supporters don’t get the credit for their social conscience and charitable efforts.”
There was four brave speakers on the night. Chris, Leigh, Laura and Mikey whose stories where awe inspiring, inspirational and heart-warming. All four had been on real journeys. Brave journeys. Journeys that saw them all seek help when they were at their lowest, get help and embrace their inner selves and become the people they have become. All four were thankful for the projects run by the Celtic FC Foundation.
The club publicize their work in Africa and the Caribbean but these projects are going on in the background. “There is a risk associated with what we do” said Tony. That’s clear to see when you listen to these stories that it would be far easier for the Foundation not to run these types of projects but that would be the wrong decision.
We were founded in November 1887 to tackle the social issues of then. The Celtic FC Foundation are tackling the social issues of now. That is the Celtic Way.
“A club open to all, more than a football club, aren’t just plaudits or sound-bites” Tony, proudly stated. The stars of the night, Chris, Leigh, Laura and Mikey are testament to that.
Tony Hamilton will be our guest on A Celtic State Of Mind Podcast which will be out on Friday Evening. He talks about: Tommy Burns, Paolo Di Canio, Martin O’Neill and Brendan Rodgers. There is also talk about DJing and New Order. Check out our other podcasts here.
