La Liga 2017: Five things we learned from Las Palmas 1-4 Barcelona

The biggest talking points from Sunday’s game

The patched up defense stood firm

Barcelona's defensive problems took another hit with Javier Mascherano injured in the warm-up meaning Marlon Santos was drafted into the back four at very late notice. Despite the interruption to their plans, the defence stood strong and stopped Las Palmas with Samuel Umtiti again impressive. The Las Palmas goal came once the team switched to a back three and there was a loss of composure.

The title will go down to the wire

Barça have one game left, Madrid have two. The title race is going to the final day and it seems Madrid’s extra game against Celta Vigo could well be the deciding factor of the season.

Lionel Messi aside, Ter Stegen is a genuine contender for player of the season

In his first season as the definite number one, Ter Stegen has risen to the occasion. He often makes point-saving blocks and keeps his team in the game. A claim often lobbied at Victor Valdés was that he had such a good defense ahead of him that he rarely had to make a save, Ter Stegen does not have that luxury and is often called upon multiple times during games.

Games happening at the same time should be more common in Spain

La Liga tends to avoid games happening at the same time. In order to maximise TV money, they try to have the big three of Real MadridBarcelona and Atlético Madrid playing at different times but from a spectator’s point of view, the simultaneous play is always more exciting. As it stands table and goal alerts from other games adds to the experience and should be more common in Spain as it is in other leagues.

Suárez, Neymar and Messi are ridiculously good at football

Yes, I know it's obvious but it is worth stating over and over again. The Barça front three are so phenomenally good that even if the team is not playing well, the attackers are lethal enough to score the goals to win the game. Is this a smart tactic against Europe’s elite? No, but it can get you a win away at Las Palmas.
