The only ones celebrating Eric Calvillo’s first professional goal more than the youngster’s loved ones were Rayo OKC.
His lone goal in the New York Cosmos’ 1-0 win at Minnesota United FC on Saturday night secured the fourth and final postseason spot for the expansion side.
As the top seed in The Championship, the NASL’s four-team postseason competition, the Cosmos will host Rayo OKC at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium in the semifinal round on Saturday, November 5 at 7 p.m. ET.
With a record of 14W-2D-0L at Shuart this year, the Cosmos pose a daunting threat for any visiting team, but Rayo OKC has yet to wilt in any of their three prior meetings with New York. Rayo OKC handed the Cosmos one of their worst losses of the year with a 3-0 result earlier in the Fall Season in Oklahoma City, were one of just two teams to take a point at Shuart after earning a 1-1 draw, and they were on the losing end of a narrow 1-0 road result back in the Spring Season that two of their players sent off.
Rayo OKC will also be heading into their postseason matchup with the Cosmos as one of the hottest teams in the NASL. After a few hiccups in his first few weeks in charge, interim head coach Gerard Nus has transformed his squad into a well-oiled machine in the last two months. Rayo OKC are unbeaten in their last nine outings and have taken all three points in four straight matches to rise above the rest of the field in the league’s tight postseason race.
Sunday’s home match against Indy Eleven will close out Rayo OKC’s regular season.
Indy will host the NASL’s other postseason semifinal against FC Edmonton next Saturday at 3 p.m. ET. The winner of that match will face either the Cosmos or Rayo OKC in The Championship final the following weekend.
