Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has been ruled out of the 2018 World Cup with a knee injury.
That’s what ManUtd.com claim, as the shot-stopper has been removed from Argentina’s 23-man squad.
Romero has been out injured since March after a clash with Diego Costa in an international match against Spain, with Joel Pereira playing back-up to David de Gea in that time.
To see that the 31-year-old has been ruled out of the biggest international tournament in football is a real shame, and it’ll be a bitter pill to swallow for Argentina’s #1, who may not ever get the chance to represent his country at a World Cup again.
With surgery required, it’s going to be a long summer for Romero. Now his focus will be on getting fit for United’s pre-season tour of the United States in July. Knee injuries aren’t to be messed with, however, so I don’t hold much hope that he’ll be ready to go for then.
Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if the goalkeeper takes the decision to leave Old Trafford this summer. There were rumours back in January suggesting he was unhappy here. The lack of playing time certainly must be disappointing for him; particularly at this stage in his career.
