Backing up a story from Spanish journalist Jose Alvarez earlier today, another big gun for City transfers, Sam Lee of Goal, has this afternoon confirmed that Manchester City are close to signing Jorginho from Napoli.
Napoli’s involvement in the Serie A title race is likely to delay any official announcement, but City are said to be close to sealing a deal for the 26-year-old pass master, who has shone in Maurizio Sarri’s impressive Napoli team this season.
Jorginho, who is valued at around £50million, will be one of only two signings currently planned at City this summer, according to Lee.
The second signing will be a world-class forward, with Pep Guardiola ready to pledge much of his transfer budget to the acquisition of another elite attacker.
As it stands, it will not be the recently linked Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappé, but if his situation changes with PSG walking a Financial Fair Play tightrope, the Blues could make a new attempt to sign the 19-year-old.
Riyad Mahrez, a transfer target in January, is also not considered a priority, although Guardiola retains an interest in the Leicester City man – but he isn’t at the top of the list as things stand.
Eden Hazard of Chelsea remains the dream target but extracting him from a Premier League rival would be very complicated and like Mbappé he would command a fee of around £150million if any deal was possible.
As revealed exclusively by City Watch in February, Bayer Leverkusen youngster Leon Bailey is on the shortlist of attackers being watched and could be a alternative, but it is still unclear who the main priority is to reinforce the attacking side.
And despite recent reports, City have no plans to bring in another centre-back according to Sam Lee, with Guardiola likely content with his options of Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones and club record signing Aymeric Laporte.
