Crystal Palace FC has been given the green light for a £100M stadium redevelopment at Selhurst Park.
The south London club has been given its support by Croydon Council who will now submit plans to the Mayor of London’s office.
As part of the proposal to increase the size of the Main Stand, Crystal Palace FC will have to provide funding to improve transport around the ground on match days.
Mott MacDonald is providing multidisciplinary engineering services to Crystal Palace Football Club (CPFC) on the project, which will increase the stand’s capacity from approximately 5,400 to 13,500.
The firm is also carrying out air quality and noise assessments and was involved in some of the more challenging aspects of the planning application, such as the transport strategy for the greater spectator numbers and the stormwater management strategy.
Mott MacDonald’s project director Rob Hazell said: “Selhurst Park has been home to CPFC since 1924 and this redevelopment will help both the club and stadium enter a bright and exciting new era. We will work closely with leading stadium architects KSS to help the club achieve its vision of celebrating its south London roots and creating an impressive sense of arrival and experience for its fans.”
Scheduled to begin at the end of the 2018/19 season, the redevelopment will see the installation of a glass Main Stand which includes a curved roof designed to funnel sound down to the pitch and the Arthur Wait Stand opposite.
Designed by the same the firm behind the redevelopment of Anfield, Twickenham and Wimbledon, KSS architects, the project will increase the capacity at Selhurst Park from 26,000 to more than 34,000 and is due to be complete for the start of the 2021/22.
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said: “I am absolutely delighted that Croydon Council has backed our plans for Selhurst Park. This project will not only transform the stadium, which has been our home since 1924, but it will also have a positive impact on the south London community.”
Crystal Palace are the latest English club to begin stadium redevelopments. Earlier this week, New Civil Engineer reported that Chelsea had selected VolkerFitzpatrick as its ‘preferred supplier’ for Stamford Bridge rail works.
