It’s hard to imagine the fanbase of a multi-championship winning club putting ownership on notice mere weeks after another successful trophy winning season.
But then again, not all leagues are the NASL — and not all clubs are the New York Cosmos.
With rumors swirling over the future of the NASL, Giovanni Savarese’s potential exit, the unknown status of their future home stadium and the mere fact that the club has not begun selling tickets for 2017, fans are understandably on edge.
With that said, the Five Points Supporters Group issued a press release early Tuesday morning in a plea with ownership for transparency.
Here is the full statement:
Over the course of the 2016 season the Cross Island Crew, La Banda Del Cosmos and the Borough Boys (Collectively known as the Five Points), have continued to give their unwavering support to their soccer club, the New York Cosmos. There has been much speculation with respect to several future aspects of the club some of which include, a new temporary stadium for the 2017 season to replace Hofstra University, season ticket sales for 2017, the fate of head coach Giovanni Savarese who has been rumored to be taking another position and the site of a permanent stadium for the club.Throughout all of the speculation in 2016, the Five Points have never once asked publicly for an answer as we understood the significance of the club’s focus needing to remain on the coaches and players on the pitch and the goals that they were striving to achieve throughout the season.Thankfully, the New York Cosmos have battled to a well-deserved 2016 NASL Championship, one that the 5 Points are very proud of. However, the answers to many questions still remain. On the heels of our club repeating as league champions, The Five Points is asking that New York Cosmos front office senior executives, come forward with some answers to all of the questions surrounding the club’s future. Our support will always be with the club however your ardent supporters are also worthy of some answers after standing by the players and coaches side all season. We look forward to sitting down with club officials in the near future.
This is the first time Cosmos supporters have called on the team for answers. However, their statement follows similar calls from This Is Cosmos Country, issuing an open letter to team chairman Seamus O’Brien in July and again in late September.
