Though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that Manchester United and Nemanja Matić have verbally agreed to a deal, Atlético Madrid are keeping their options open.
According to various reports, Atlético Madrid could bring in the Serbia international for free should United fail to keep hold of the midfielder.
United are in a very strong position no matter what happens, as they can trigger a one-year extension though Matić is very likely to sign fresh terms.
After seemingly being on his way out earlier in the season after starting just six of United’s 30 games, Matić has taken advantage of various injuries and impressed, starting 13 of United’s last 17 matches.
Atlético are likely to purchase several midfielders this summer, with Charles Aránguiz, Willian, James Rodríguez, and Ivan Rakitić amongst those rumoured to be joining the Spanish outfit.
