Kaizer Chiefs are aware they are the only club out of the big three without a star on their badge, but are in a good position this season to address their African failings.
Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns progressed to the CAF Champions League quarterfinals on Saturday as group winners, meaning they will be seeded in the knockout stage as they chase their second star.
Orlando Pirates have boasted a star on their badge since 1995 and nearly picked up another one in 2013, while Amakhosi have not represented South Africa very often on the continent.
With the club's 50th anniversary this year, doing well in Africa could send a strong message to those who point fingers at their continental absence despite their historic success in South Africa.
"Every trophy we compete in, we want to win it," says defender Daniel Cardoso, who has just signed a new contract.
"Orlando Pirates have a star on their badge. Mamelodi Sundowns have a star on their badge. We also want that star on our badge.
"When we last played in the CAF Champions League we didn’t have a good experience but we learned from that."
The former Free State Stars centre-back has a rock for Ernst Middendorp's side at the back and also up front, scoring some important goals.
"At the beginning of the season I set the goal of 10 goals. We still have 11 games to go. Hopefully, I will be able to achieve my goal. It doesn’t matter if all my goals are penalties, a goal is a goal."
Chiefs' next match is against Royal Eagles in the Nedbank Cup last 32 on Saturday (18h00).
