The MLS got in six games last Wednesday prior to a short World Cup break, and 13 teams have been or will be playing Open Cup games to fill the gap.
Atlanta United posted another impressive victory -- 2-0 at Columbus -- but stayed second behind idle (in terms of league play) Sporting Kansas City. The only other top 10 teams to play a league match were the Red Bulls (2-1 victors over Seattle) and New England (2-2 at San Jose). After losing eight of nine, the Impact won its second game of the last three (3-0 over Montreal).

The Power Rankings are based on league results only and include a team’s record in parentheses (W-L-T) and rank last week.
1. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (8-2-5), 1. A break from league action included a 3-2 defeat of FC Dallas in the Open Cup. It hosts Houston Saturday.
2. ATLANTA UNITED (10-3-3), 2. Five wins on the road is the record after a deserved victory in Columbus. Josef Martinez scored his league-leading14th goal on the half-hour and Hector Villalba added a late clincher.
3. PORTLAND (6-3-4), 3. The Timbers used their week “off” to beat the Galaxy, 1-0, in the Open Cup.
4. FC DALLAS (8-1-5), 4. FCD takes a four-game win streak in league play to Red Bull Arena for one of the weekend’s marquee matches.
5. NY RED BULLS (8-4-2), 5. Speaking of the Red Bulls, they downed the Sounders, 2-1, with goals by Danny Royer and Bradley Wright-Phillips to halt a modest three-game run sans a victory. They have scored a combined 14 goals this season.
------------------------------------
6. NEW YORK CITY FC (8-3-4), 6. Nice scheduling for team that just lost its head coach: Sunday at Toronto FC.
7. NEW ENGLAND (6-4-6), 7. The Revs surrendered a late goal that wiped out a 2-1 lead they’d built by halftime in San Jose. Diego Fagundez equalized with a sweet free kick and Cristian Penilla netted just before halftime.
8. COLUMBUS (7-4-6), 5. The second home loss of the season may feel a bit unlucky, as Crew SC doubled up AUFC on shots, 12-6, but it actually lost the possession battle 46.8 percent to 53.2 percent.
9. LOS ANGELES FC (7-4-3), 9. No league game last week, LAFC takes on USL power Sacramento Republic Wednesday in the Open Cup.
10. HOUSTON (6-5-3), 10. Dynamo takes a 1-3-3 road record to Children’s Mercy Park, where SKC is 5-1-2.
------------------------------------
11. VANCOUVER (6-5-5), 11. ‘Caps are two points above the playoff line for a game at Philadelphia, which is one point below the grade in its conference.
12. L.A. GALAXY (7-4-3), 12. Galaxy will have not played a league game for 20 days when they face San Jose June 30 at Stanford Stadium.
13. REAL SALT LAKE (7-7-1) 13. RSL gets the Quakes at home this Saturday.
14. CHICAGO (5-7-4), 14. A point in Colorado was gained when the Fire scored twice in three minutes, with the equalizer tallied by Aleksandar Katai.
15. TORONTO FC (4-7-3), 15. Since not much about the league campaign so far makes much sense, let it be known defender Nick Hagglund scored TFC’s third and fourth goals.
------------------------------------
16. PHILADELPHIA (5-7-3), 16. Philly has lost two in a row to Eastern foes as it readies for a visit by Vancouver Saturday.
17. MONTREAL (5-11-0), 21. Impact has won two of the last three and hosts a team this weekend that has lost six in a row and just fired its head coach. Ignacio Piatti scored twice against OCSC in the first of back-to-back games.
18. D.C. UNITED (2-6-4), 18. Starting and finishing the scoring for D.C. was Yamil Asad, who along with fellow goalscorers Paul Arriola and Darren Mattocks ran rampant. The defense could not cope, however, and after blowing a 3-0 also conceded a late equalizer.
19. MINNESOTA UNITED (5-8-1), 19. Loons played Monday night in the Open Cup, are at Colorado Saturday.
20. ORLANDO CITY (6-8-1), 17. Assistant coach Bobby Murphy will be in charge for the game at Montreal. Jason Kreis departs OCSC with a mark of 21-29-14.
------------------------------------
21. SEATTLE (3-8-2), 20. A goal by Harry Shipp in the 87th minute was all the Sounders had to show for a long cross-country trip. Home game against the Fire Saturday offers some hope.
22. COLORADO (2-9-3), 22. Early goals and own goals should add up to a home win but the Rapids failed to deliver despite leading 2-0 after 15 minutes. Dominique Badji’s goal in the seventh minute was his sixth of the season.
23. SAN JOSE (2-9-4), 23. Two more goals for Danny Hoesen and another depressing scenario: Quakes score first, fall behind, rally with late goal for a point.
