Beirut: Syria's Al Wahda have advanced to the 2017 AFC Cup Zonal Semi-finals as the best-placed runner-up in the West Zone after a 6-0 drubbing of Lebanese side Safa SC in Group B on Tuesday.
Things could have gone very differently if Safa striker Talla N’diaye had converted a penalty in the 14th minute at Sports City Stadium, but Al Wahda goalkeeper Taha Mousa saved his effort from 12 yards, setting the scene for his side’s comprehensive victory in their final Group B game.
Majed Al Haj then gave the Syrians the lead in the 43rd minute, tucking home from close range after great work by Shuaib Al Ali on the right, before Mohammed Fares doubled their lead with a header in the third minute of first half stoppage time.
Mohamad Al Hasan capitalised on a mix-up between Safa goalkeeper Mohamad Tafa and centre-back Standly Echabe three minutes after the interval to make it 3-0, and Osama Omari, Abdulhadi Shalha, and Qussai Habib added the gloss with strikes in the 83rd, 88th, and 93rd minutes, respectively.
Al Wahda's win temporarily took them to the top of Group B but holders Air Force Club of Iraq secured a 1-0 victory over Bahrain's Al Hidd later on Tuesday to finish top of the standings. However, the Syrian side's tally of 11 points bettered that of fellow Syrian team Al Jaish and Bahrain's Al Muharraq - who finished runners-up in Groups A and C respectively - as Al Wahda secured the fourth and final spot in the Zonal Semi-finals.
