Sporting Kansas City 3, Real Salt Lake 0 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

Sporting Kansas City was all business in a convincing 3-0 win over Real Salt Lake  on a cold, rainy Saturday night at Children's Mercy Park.
Benny Feilhaber got the got home side on the board early, first winning a ball back and then finishing the play with a curling shot from just outside the box. Dom Dwyer doubled the lead shortly after halftime from a similar distance when he ripped a low shot for his third goal of the year. Gerso Fernandes put the finishing touches on the rout with his stoppage time goal.
The win extended SKC's home undefeated streak to a club-record 13 straight games.

Three Things

  1. WHAT RIVARLY?SKC's win was their first over RSL since MLS Cup 2013, and it evened the all-time series between the two sides at 9-9-6, although Gerso's late goal has given SKC a 30-29 goals advantage. A total of eight yellow cards were shown on the night - four to each side - and RSL was called for 16 fouls to SKC's 7.
  2. TARGET FEILHABER: Benny Feilhaber was looking to reverse the recent trend of results, and he did his part. Not only did he break up the RSL play before scoring his beauty of a goal, but he also got under RSL's skin all night, creating chances with timely passes and leading both teams with four fouls suffered.
  3. INJURIES ON INJURIES: At some point, the injuries will cease, but it was tonight. After leaving last week's game early with a hamstring injury, goalkeeper Nick Rimando had not recovered in time and was replaced in the starting lineup by Matt VanOekel, who made his second career MLS start. Veteran midfielder Kyle Beckerman joined Rimando on the sideline, a late scratch after traveling with the team due to a calf injury sustained at training last week.
