Mercato: les futurs propriétaires de Newcastle rêveraient de Bale

En perte de vitesse au Real Madrid, régulièrement gêné par des blessures, Gareth Bale pourrait être invité à se trouver un nouveau club cet été. Selon Marca et le Daily Mail, le consortium saoudien qui veut racheter Newcastle serait déterminé à le recruter.

Emmené par le fonds d'investissement public (PIF) saoudien, piloté par le prince héritier Mohammed Ben Salmane, ce consortium a prévu de mettre 345 millions d'euros sur la table pour s'offrir les Magpies, et serait donc prêt à dégainer un autre chèque dans la foulée pour convaincre le Real Madrid de lui céder son ailier gallois de 30 ans.

Loin de son meilleur niveau depuis quelques mois, la faute notamment à des pépins physiques réguliers, Bale avait déjà été annoncé proche d'un départ lors des deux derniers mercatos. Des clubs chinois lui faisaient alors les yeux doux. Mais les négociations avaient à chaque capoté.

Ces dernières semaines, la presse espagnole expliquait que des formations de MLS pourraient tenter leur chance cet été. A en croire Marca, Bale serait toutefois réticent à l'idée de quitter Madrid, une ville qu'il apprécie, même s'il n'est pas un titulaire indiscutable aux yeux de Zinedine Zidane.

Le Real pas opposé à un départ

Rejoindre Newcastle, 13e de Premier League au moment de l'interruption de la compétition pour cause de coronavirus, pourrait aussi s'apparenter à un certain déclin, même si le club aura de toutes nouvelles ambitions en cas de rachat par le consortium saoudien. Le Daily Mail précise par ailleurs qu'en 2013, au moment de son départ pour Madrid, Tottenham avait fait inscrire une clause dans son contrat. Elle stipulait que si le Real voulait le vendre et recevait une offre d'un club anglais, les Spurs bénéficiaient de 72h pour surenchérir. Une clause qui n'existerait plus depuis le 30 juin 2019.

Newcastle pourrait donc avoir le champ libre, d'autant plus que le Real ne serait pas opposé à un transfert. En plus de Bale, les futurs propriétaires des Magpies aimeraient faire de Mauricio Pochettino leur premier entraîneur. Outre Bale, Arturo Vidal, Juan Cuadrado, Philippe Coutinho et Edinson Cavani feraient notamment partie des joueurs ciblés.

Wolverhampton Wanderers players will be swabbed on arrival as they prepare for a return to training on Monday. 

Nuno Espirito Santo and his players, plus all his coaching staff, are all to undergo coronavirus testing when they return to the club's Compton base after six weeks without group training.

Wolves are one of the first Premier League clubs to make a full return to training, with individual sessions to be staggered over the first week.

All players will be swabbed outside the Compton gates on arrival as the club takes extreme measures to avoid spreading the virus, while the squad will also be asked to wash their own kits.

Nuno, the head coach, and Portuguese players Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves and Ruben Vinagre, plus Belgium international Leander Dendoncker, all flew back into England over the weekend after self-isolating overseas.

The first week will be individually tailored sessions, while in the second week they hope to move towards working in smaller groups if government rules permit it.

Wolves were sixth in the table when the season was postponed due to the pandemic, five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, while the club is also in the round of 16 of the Europa League.

Nuno's squad played their last game on March 20, in a 1-1 draw against Olympiakos in the first leg behind closed doors.

Nuno had branded it “absurd” that Wolves were forced to play. The Europa League had already been a long and arduous road for the club, with their European excursions beginning way back on July 25. Their trip to Athens was against their wishes.

Stoichkov argumenta que todo lo que hizo Guardiola fue aprovechar el trabajo previo ya realizado por su predecesor, Frank Rijkaard. "Tenía un equipo hecho, el trabajo de Guardiola fue fácil, sabía el secreto de La Masía. El equipo que él entrenó había sido construido por Rijkaard, él ya se lo encontró estructurado. Messi y otros jóvenes ya debutaron con Rijkaard y las mismas cosas se habrían conseguido sin Pep", insiste el polémico exfutbolista.

No se refiere sólo al astro argentino, sino también apunta a que otros jugadores ya estaban en plenitud o en ascenso cuando llegó Guardiola. "Estaban Henry, Ronaldinho, Deco, Puyol o Valdés. Había jugadores que Pep tenía que quitar, pero Iniesta y Pedro entraron, dio más tiempo a Messi y el equipo ya estaba completo", recordó.

Premier League call for a ‘spirit of compromise’ ahead of crunch meeting to decide season plans

The Premier League will insist on a “spirit of compromise” ahead of what is expected to be a fractious Monday videoconference, and what many sources believe could be the most consequential football meeting in a long time.

While it is not certain that a vote will be held on how the competition will return, the key details – like testing and stadiums – will again be discussed in the hope of coming closer to consensus ahead of Uefa’s 25 May cut-off point for solutions.

The build-up to the videoconference has already been complicated by Brighton chief executive Paul Barber’s revelation that three of the club’s players had tested positive for coronavirus, with concern over that running alongside growing tension since the last meeting on 1 May.

Suspicion has similarly grown since then, both due to briefings and public comments. It was reported by The Independent on Friday that some members of the top 14 have started calling the bottom six ‘Project Sabotage’. That is in jest but there are more serious questions about why they keep just putting up obstacles to any solutions, with no alternatives. On the other side, the bottom six feel it is unfair to cast them in that light, as they do want football back in some form – but through the fairest solution.

That is where the primary tension lies, with the issue of neutral grounds proving a lightning rod discussion.

The bottom six have declared their opposition to it. The top 14 and Premier League have repeated to them that it is simply non-negotiable since this is the only way the government and police have said that football is coming back. It is the only way safety requirements can be met.

This is where the Premier League hope to strike some sort of compromise. While potential solutions are complicated, the situation is relatively simple.

If football does not get back up and running, they could lose out on more than £700m of international broadcasting income. While Sky and BT would not push for returns due to their symbiotic relationship with the Premier League, that would not be the case for rights holders abroad.

It is this situation that has of course made the competition lucrative, and is precisely why so many clubs are concerned about the changed parameters of potentially going down. It has similarly been stressed to clubs that scrapping relegation is off the table.

Figures within the Premier League will insist, however, that not resuming football as soon as is safe in neutral grounds could have consequences beyond that immediate money or this season. It could – in the words of one source – “kill the golden goose” due to the knock-on effect on next season, and the perception of the competition abroad and among broadcasters.

If that happens, it will not be just relegation places on the line. It may be an existential threat to jobs and even clubs.

The same rationale has also been impressed upon the players, who see their own lucrative pay structure at risk, despite understandable concerns about the safety of playing in this environment. There have also been fair complaints from some within the game that the players and staff have not yet been consulted. The Premier League, however, plan full breakdowns of what ‘Project Restart’ will entail – and how assurances can be made on safety – once they agree on how to get back playing.

As with the inevitability of positive tests, this may be another area that requires creative solutions, and even the potential for individual opt-outs. The message on Monday will nevertheless be clear: if they don’t play within the current parameters, clubs are going to have to be prepared for some very big changes.

MLS Classics: Columbus Crew SC, New York Red Bulls square off in first MLS Cup appearance

A first-ever MLS Cup trip for a pair of league originals is on deck for the latest edition of “MLS Classics” as Columbus Crew SC and the New York Red Bulls met in the 2008 final.

Led by future LA Galaxy coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Crew SC were expected to be there after capturing its second Supporters’ Shield. The Red Bulls run to its only Cup appearance was a surprise with Juan Carlos Osorio’s squad finishing fifth in the East, but upset the defending champion Houston Dynamo and Real Salt Lake in the playoffs.

Schelotto had a vintage performance in the final, assisting on all three Crew SC goals and the late great Sigi Schmid became the first coach to win MLS Cup with two different teams.

El Valencia completa el segundo entrenamiento

La plantilla del Valencia, dividida en tres turnos y con estrictas medidas de separación y cumpliendo a rajatabla las pautas sanitarias fijadas por las autoridades gobernativas, realizó este domingo su segundo entrenamiento en la ciudad deportiva tras haber reanudado el sábado el trabajo después de más de cincuenta días de confinamiento a causa de la crisis sanitaria causada por el coronavirus.

El trabajo volvió a ser individualizado, aunque algunos jugadores compartieron campo de entrenamiento. También se pudo ver a los porteros recibiendo disparos de algunos de los preparadores del equipo técnico de Celades.

A los futbolistas se les ha visto ejercitarse sin mascarillas ni guantes en el terreno de juego, salvo algunos como Gabriel Paulista y Eliaquim Mangala. Todos, no obstantte, llevaban mascarillas y guantes cuando han entrado en alguna zona interior de las instalaciones deportivas.

Los jugadores volvieron a llegar vestidos con ropa de entrenamiento de sus domicilios particulares y fueron, de nuevo, sometidos a un control de temperatura antes de acceder al recinto. Igualmente, han tenido que ducharse, tras la sesión preparatoria, en sus casas.

La plantilla valencianista fue, recordemos, una de las más afectadas por la pandemia de coronavirus.

Ligue 1: l'OL s'en prend à Caïazzo, Holveck et Féry

Après la visioconférence qui a réuni ce dimanche Nicolas Holveck (Rennes), Bernard Caïazzo (Saint-Etienne) et Loïc Féry (Lorient), l'OL s'est défendu en remettant une couche sur l'arrêt de la saison de Ligue 1 compte tenu de la pandémie de coronavirus.

Le service communication de l'OL est en ce moment très actif... y compris tard dans la soirée. A 23h50, le club rhodanien a publié un nouveau communiqué pour répondre à la visioconférence tenue ce dimanche par le président de Rennes Nicolas Holveck et ses homologues de Saint-Etienne et de Lorient Bernard Caïazzo et Loïc Féry.

L'objet? L'arrêt de la saison de Ligue 1 entérinée par la Ligue de football professionnel et donc du classement final. Et ça taille d'entrer, en évoquant les trois hommes "tout heureux de cet arrêt prématuré du championnat, qui leur permet avec une décision contestable sur la forme d’atteindre leurs objectifs dès la 28e journée alors qu’ils n’avaient pas de certitudes si la saison avait dû aller à son terme".

Toujours l'espoir de faire marche arrière

Après avoir une nouvelle fois déploré la décision de la LFP, l'OL renchérit en assurant qu'il était "possible d’envisager un autre scénario permettant de terminer le championnat en août, par exemple avec un système de play-offs, sous réserve bien sûr de l’évolution de la situation sanitaire et tout en respectant les consignes données par le gouvernement".

En ajoutant, comme depuis plusieurs jours, qu'une autre solution serait possible: "L’OL continue de penser que le football français est actuellement dans la mauvaise direction mais que ce n’est peut-être pas trop tard pour essayer d’imaginer, au regard de ce qui se passe partout en Europe, quelque chose qui soit cohérent tant sur le plan politique que sanitaire et sportif".
