If MLS wants to be 'major' then it must return when the NFL and NBA do

Last week’s revelation that MLS was seeking up to a 50 percent reduction in player salaries should the 2020 season have to be condensed because of the COVID-19 pandemic sure opened up a can of worms. 

The collective bargaining agreement that was reached (but not ratified) weeks before the league’s 25th anniversary campaign kicked off is suddenly is danger of collapsing. There have even been suggestions that if the players aren’t willing to take that severe haircut, MLS owners — who, unlike their counterparts in North America’s other major sports leagues, generate the lion’s share of their revenue via gameday ticket sales — could decide it’s simply not worth resuming the season at all. 

Don’t believe a word of it. 

Although the multi-billion-dollar TV contracts that the NFL, English Premier League and other entities have struck with broadcasters incentivize everyone involved to restart as soon as possible, MLS and other more humble outfits find themselves in a much more vexing predicament. While made-for-TV leagues would stand to lose the bulk of their revenue if they can’t complete their 2019-20 schedules, some smaller competitions around the world have already concluded that resuming would lead to catastrophic financial losses in the absence of paying customers. 

On the surface, MLS appears no different. The top soccer competition in the United States and Canada receives just $90 million a season from its media partners, or less than $3.5 million for each of its 26 teams. That figure isn’t enough to cover player salaries, never mind all the other expenses professional sports teams incur in the course of normal operations. MLS has built itself on fiscal responsibility, doubling in size over the last quarter-century largely because of it. It also hasn’t been afraid to take drastic action when necessary, excising money-bleeding clubs on three separate occasions over the first 20 years of its existence. 

MLS, though, is also exceptionally protective of its image. League brass are acutely aware of MLS’ perception within the overall sports ecosystem. They know that not only do they have to contend with traditional North American sports leagues for sponsorship dollars and fans’ disposable income — which figures to be a much tougher sell coming out of the coronavirus crisis — they’re also competing for soccer fans’ attention against cash-flush European circuits that field iconic teams and employ the game’s biggest superstars. 

If MLS wants to live up to the “major” in its name, there is no way it can afford not to return when the rest of its competitors do. Imagine the damage to the league’s reputation if, when the NFL and NBA are back up and running, MLS is instead locking its players out of its stadiums over a pay dispute. An outfit that struggles for mainstream media attention in the best of times would be forgotten entirely. Any publicity it did get would damage the slowly changing notion that it’s not a serious player on the global sports scene.

There are still hurdles to overcome. MLS players have continued to receive their full salaries during the shutdown; by July, which seems like the earliest date play could potentially resume, they will already have been paid more than half of their annual income. That means that if the league gets its way, they’d effectively be playing whatever passes for the 2020 season for free.

That’s probably not going happen. Common sense will probably prevail. The players will probably wind up accepting a smaller pay cut in the end. 

And MLS’ collection of billionaire owners probably won’t like it. It’s going to cost them a ton of money. But compared to the long-lasting (and asset-diminishing) impact that canceling the entire season at the very moment other sports return could cause, it would probably be relatively small price to pay.

O documento estratégico para a retorno do futebol está a ser avaliado pelo Governo e especialistas da área da saúde, mas João Paulo Rebelo, secretário de Estado da Juventude e Desporto, não arrisca ainda uma data para o regresso das equipas aos treinos ou jogos.

“A minha convicção é que só após o fim do estado de emergência haverá um calendário definido”, afirma ao Expresso o governante, que defende que o desporto não pode ser deixado para trás na reabertura pós-confinamento, mas sem descurar a proteção de atletas e famílias.

O Plano de Ação concertado com a DGS para a retoma apresentado ao Governo pela Liga foi elaborado pelos médicos das SAD's da Liga NOS e ProLiga e após consulta a especialistas da área da infecciologia, pneumologia, medicina interna e de saúde pública, que advertem que o guião sugerido pode ser “alterado em função das diretrizes das autoridades de saúde nacionais e internacionais”.

Assim, após um mês e meio de treinos em casa e corridas a solo ao ar livre, a Liga propõe que antes do retorno à competição os jogadores cumpram três fases de adaptação para garantir que são capazes de jogar 90 minutos “na melhor condição física, com o menor risco de lesões e maior performance desportiva”.

La decisione del Governo di non far ripartire gli allenamenti degli sport di squadra il prossimo 4 maggio, è stata una doccia gelata per chi vedeva imminente la luce fuori dal tunnel. Particolarmente duro il ds della Lazio, Igli Tare: "Siamo rimasti sorpresi dalle dichiarazioni del premier Conte e dal ministro Spadafora. Ci sentiamo discriminati. Non so quale sia lo scopo del ministro, ma in questo modo non sta aiutando il calcio".

"Perché Juve e Inter non prendono posizione?"

Il dirigente albanese rompe così il silenzio dopo diverse settimane. La posizione della Lazio è sempre stata chiara nel voler concludere sul campo la stagione. E il nuovo ostacolo in una strada che sembrava in discesa non è stato preso bene a Formello: "Non capisco perché ci si possa allenare in un parco pubblico e non nei centri sportivi delle squadre, così non si tutela la salute dei calciatori e delle persone - dice Tare ai microfoni di Lazio Style Radio - Siamo consapevoli di dover stare attenti ad ogni rischio, anche per rispettare i sacrifici fatti da tutte le persone, ma così non va bene. Non dimentichiamoci che sono passati due mesi dall'ultima partita, uno stop mai visto nella storia del calcio. Non stiamo cercando di aprire gli stadi, ma soltanto di svolgere le ultime partite e finire il campionato nel rispetto delle regole. Il tutto prescinde dalla classifica, che abbiamo guadagnato sul campo. Abbiamo bisogno di finire questo torneo per il bene del sistema calcistico italiano. In Germania sono tutti uniti nel finire il campionato, c'è di mezzo la continuità calcistica nella nazione. La stessa cosa vale per l'Italia, tutte le società devono prendere posizione: il protocollo presentato rispetta tutte le norme". Tare chiede infine un'alleanza tra club: "Non mi riesco a spiegare perché squadre come Juventus ed Inter non prendano posizione".

Durissimo anche Marco Parolo: "Questo decreto ci penalizza, forse c'è qualcuno che non vuole tentare di far ricominciare il campionato. Tornare a giocare vorrebbe dire dare speranza a tutti. La categoria dei calciatori è stata penalizzata dal Dpcm - aggiunge il centrocampista biancoceleste - Ci sarebbe anche maggior sicurezza su un campo tenuto bene sul quale non si rischiano infortuni per svolgerci, inoltre, lo stesso lavoro atletico, anche se a livello di singoli, che abbiamo svolto prima della quarantena".

Gravina: "Pronti a modificare protocollo"

Seppur con toni più placati, anche la Figc ha espresso il proprio malcontento dopo le decisione governative. Il presidente Gravina fa il punto della situazione: "Lavoriamo per far ripartire il calcio in sicurezza, non per farlo ripartire e basta. Continueremo a dialogare con le istituzioni animati dallo spirito di collaborazione che ci ha sempre contraddistinto, avanzando proposte, recependo osservazioni e proponendo soluzioni. Siamo convinti della strada che abbiamo intrapreso perché è seria e responsabile, l'unica che persegue l'interesse generale del sistema e quello più complessivo dello sport italiano che, per diversi motivi, sarebbe anch'esso danneggiato dallo stop definitivo del campionato di Serie A". In tal senso potrebbe essere modificato il protocollo che permetterebbe il via libera al ritorno in campo. La Figc ha infatti chiesto di essere ascoltata dal Comitato Tecnico Scientifico che coadiuva il Governo nella delicata gestione dell'emergenza Covid 19 proprio per trovare una strada condivisa. "La Commissione medico scientifica della Figc ha stilato un protocollo molto rigoroso, come hanno fatto tutti gli altri settori che ambiscono alla ripartenza - afferma il presidente federale, che ha convocato un Consiglio Federale per l'8 maggio -, ma siamo pronti ad integrarlo e a modificarlo recependo le indicazioni dello stesso Comitato, del Coni e riconoscendo l'FMSI quale riferimento scientifico per armonizzare il tutto. Una volta migliorato, ci potranno essere tutti i presupposti per il via libera definitivo al 18 maggio".

Nicchi: "E' stata una mazzata"

Molto critico nei confronti del ministro Spadafora anche il numero degli arbitri, Marcello Nicchi: "Tutta la popolazione è stata rispettosa delle disposizioni governative e ha fatto tutto quello che è stato chiesto di fare. Ma inizio a essere moderatamente pessimista: mi sembra di vedere che non abbiamo ancora capito chi prende le decisioni e chi deve farlo. Per dei professionisti fermi da così tanto tempo sentirsi dire che dobbiamo aspettare altri 20 giorni per provare a ricominciare è stata una bella mazzata".

Il presidente dell'Aia è dunque stufo dei continui rinvii: "Non si può continuare a rimandare di 20-30-40 giorni decisioni prese da mesi. Se non ci sono a giugno le condizioni di rischio zero, come ci possono essere a settembre-ottobre le condizioni per un nuovo campionato? Vuol dire che questa fabbrica non riprenderà mai". Anche Nicchi, come Gravina, è rimasto deluso dalla bocciatura del protocollo: "Si rimane poi sorpresi da un fatto: pochi giorni fa, quando ci siamo confrontati con Spadafora e le altre componenti federali, è stato da tutti riconosciuto che il protocollo era di grande spessore e valore. Ora si apprende che non è buono. Spero allora che ce ne venga fornito uno migliore se ci si riesce. Le chance di completare la stagione? 50 e 50".

Ceballos has not spoken to Zidane since leaving Real Madrid for Arsenal on loan

Dani Ceballos hasn’t spoken to Zinedine Zidane since leaving Real Madrid to join Arsenal on loan at the beginning of the season - yet despite this, the Spaniard says he hopes he will play for Madrid again at some point.

Valencia and Sevilla have been linked with moves for Ceballos, but for now he is an Arsenal player – and he insists this is his focus.

"I haven't spoken to Zidane since I left,” Ceballos told Movistar. “It has to be difficult to have a dressing room with so many players. I don't think Zidane talks to the loan players.”

When asked if he thought he would play for Madrid again, he replied: "Hopefully. I now have a contract with Arsenal. At the moment in Madrid it is difficult to play with the players that are there. Now I am focused on being important at a club.”

Ceballos burst onto the scene in the Premier League with two assists in his second appearance for Arsenal but, with 24 appearances under his belt, his club tally still stands at just one goal and two assists.

A lengthy injury layoff at the end of 2019 didn’t help, but he is now back fit and training at Arsenal’s London Colney base following the club’s decision to return from coronavirus isolation at home.

“The club has put us in training and I go to training camp individually,” he added. “It is the only thing I leave home for.

“I woke up one morning and saw [Mikel] Arteta [had tested] positive. The team was quarantined.There were players with symptoms, but we are all fine. They haven't tested us.

"I am doing as best as I can. It is hard being away from family. Here [in England] you can walk down the street with ease and go out to exercise once a day.”

Ceballos may have raised eyebrows in Madrid recently when he named Barcelona legend Pep Guardiola as 'possibly the best coach in history', but he insists he is learning from Guardiola’s former protege Arteta, too.

"It is what I think because I identify with his way of playing, although in Arsenal in three months I have learned a lot with Mikel Arteta."

De hecho, ha sido Rodolfo Borrell quien ha tenido que modificar su rol para asumir ese cargo durante algunos meses.

Según ha publicado Goal, uno de los relacionados ha sido Xabi Alonso, actual entrenador de la Real Sociedad B. Alonso visitó la ciudad deportiva del Manchester City en 2018 y ha descrito a Guardiola como el mejor entrenador con el que ha trabajado, después de su etapa en el Bayern Munich.

Además, Arteta y Alonso son buenos amigos. "Sé que algún día será entrenador", dijo el técnico del Arsenal en Twitter. "Ahora está entrenando al segundo equipo de la Real Sociedad y será un gran entrenador en el futuro, estoy seguro", añadió.

Boldt über das HSV-Umfeld: „Ausschläge in beide Richtungen sind extrem“

Bei einem Traditionsverein in der 1. Bundesliga oder 2. Liga zu arbeiten hat ganz besondere Reize. Jonas Boldt, Sportvorstand des Hamburger SV, erklärt die Besonderheit des Umfelds.

Was verbindet Eintracht Frankfurt, den 1. FC Köln, Schalke 04, den VfB Stuttgart oder den Hamburger SV? Es sind Mannschaften, die zu der Riege der Traditionsklubs gehören und von ihrem Umfeld leben. Nach fünf Niederlagen in Serie ruhig weiterarbeiten? Kaum möglich! Dafür aber nach vier Siegen in fünf Partien auf die Euphoriebremse treten? Ebenfalls nur sehr schwer zu meistern.

Boldt erklärt das Umfeld des HSV

Jonas Boldt musste dies in seiner kurzen Zeit beim HSV schon kennenlernen. Er sagte dem kicker: „Auf einen Klub mit einem emotional-kritischen Umfeld in einer schwierigen Situation. Aber eben auch auf einen Klub mit einer unglaublichen Wucht und Strahlkraft.“ Es ist diese Mischung, die die Arbeit bei Erfolg angenehm – und bei Niederlagenserien so unangenehm werden lässt.

Zwischen Depression und Euphorie besteht nur ein schmaler Grat

Boldt erklärte: „Die Ausschläge sind extrem, in beide Richtungen. Nach unserer Delle zum Hinrundenende hieß es, der HSV sei schlecht wie nie – weil der Klub in seiner ersten Zweitliga-Saison zur Winterpause mehr Punkte hatte. Nach unserem Rückrundenstart mit drei Siegen war es plötzlich wieder nur noch die Frage, mit wie vielen Punkten Vorsprung und an welchem Spieltag wir aufsteigen.“

Entweder schwarz oder weiß

Genau mit diesen Bewertungen müssen auch andere Verantwortliche von Traditionsklubs kämpfen: „Die Darstellung des HSV ist gefühlt nur schwarz und weiß.“ Für die Verantwortlichen bedeutet dies: Ruhe bewahren: „Entscheidend ist deshalb, dass sich unsere analytische Herangehensweise davon nicht beeinflussen lässt.“

Boldt nennt die Gründe

Der Sportvorstand des HSV sieht aber insgesamt „mehrer Gründe“ für diese emotionalen Achterbahnfahrten: „Einer ist sicher die große Vergangenheit, die wahnsinnigen Erfolge, vor mittlerweile aber fast 40 Jahren. In der Welt hatte Hamburg zwei Wahrzeichen: den Hafen und den HSV. So eine Vergangenheit weckt immer Sehnsüchte.“ Boldt sieht noch einen weiteren Aspekt in den zurückliegenden zehn Jahre, „in denen vieles gebröckelt ist“. Doch die Diskussionen zeigen ihm: „Aber auch jetzt gilt noch: Der HSV ist keinem egal.“
