Paris Saint-Germain director Leonardo warns not to expect any ‘€100m’ transfers this summer, as the COVID-19 pandemic cost the club circa €200m.
The Ligue 1 giants are usually among the biggest spenders, but the decision to cut the French season short was particularly damaging.
“What happened has touched the whole planet, but it will also be felt on the transfer market,” Leonardo told Le Journal du Dimanche.
“The finances of clubs are impacted and that includes us too. People say we’ve lost around €200m? Yes, it’s probably close to that.
“I don’t believe there will be any €100m transfers this summer, as nobody can afford to spend that kind of money, not even us. We have very significant losses at PSG.”
This will effectively rule Paris Saint-Germain out of the running for Serie A players like Sergej Milinkovic-Savic of Lazio and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, as their price-tags remain at least €100m.
Le10Sport.com claimed today that Leonardo made an offer worth €60m for Milinkovic-Savic, but that is far below the asking price.
“We are going to have to be more creative, finding solutions that aren’t too expensive. With a few adjustments, regardless of those leaving, our squad can remain competitive.”
Leonardo confirmed Thiago Silva, Edinson Cavani and Layvin Kurzawa are among those walking away as free agents this summer.
