South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has made an announcement that could have a big impact on the Premier Soccer League for the immediate future.
Ramaphosa today confirmed that all gatherings of more than 100 people are now prohibited, meaning that supporters will not be able to watch games if they do continue to go ahead behind closed doors, or the league may opt to suspend the league instead.
There has been no official word from the PSL as yet whether the upcoming games in the week ahead will be played without fans, but the government decision will force the South African Football Association as well as the league into making a decision after they previously said that matches would be going on as planned.
Sporting events around the world, including the English Premier League, LaLiga, and the upcoming 2021 African Cup of Nations qualifiers have all been suspended and several football leagues are only expected to start back up again in April - now the PSL may be forced to follow suit.
Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns have both cancelled media open days that were scheduled for this week following the presidential address.
The PSL have, however confirmed that they will 'hold an urgent EXCO and press conference on Monday', with a short statement this evening reading:
"The Premier Soccer League, the largest event organiser in South Africa, in its response to the State President’s announcement that gatherings of more than 100 people be prohibited, will be holding an urgent meeting of its Executive Committee on Monday, 16 March 2020 at 12h00 noon after which a press conference will be held to announce the details of its programme going forward."
