Preliminary Stage 2: Port FC (THA) 0-1 Ceres Negros FC (PHI)

Bangkok: Ceres-Negros booked a date with FC Tokyo in the 2020 AFC Champions League Playoff round as a second half error from Port FC goalkeeper Worawut Srisupa handed the Filipino side a 1-0 win at PAT Stadium on Tuesday.

Worawut’s skewed attempt to punch Stephan Schrock’s centre clear six minutes into the second half flew into his own goal and that was enough to take Risto Vidakovic’s side into the next round after holding off an increasingly desperate Port FC attack.

At a packed PAT Stadium, Worwut had earlier denied both Bienvenido Maranon and Mike Ott either side of a long range free-kick from Port FC striker Heberty, which scrambled along the ground before bouncing wide of Roland Muller’s right post.
Pakorn Parmpak’s delightfully weighted centre from the right should have allowed Bordin Phala to open the scoring for the home side midway through the half, but the 25-year-old was unable to work the ball out from under his feet and the moment passed.
With five minutes left before the interval Bordin was guilty of squandering another opportunity, firing high over the bar after turning to shoot goalward having been played in behind the Ceres defence by Heberty.
Six minutes after the restart, however, Ceres took a surprise lead. A mix-up between defenders Tanaboon Kesarat and Kevin Deeromram resulted in the Philippines’ side winning a corner and, from the resulting set-piece, Schrock’s centre was punched into his own goal by Worawut.

The keeper made amends two minutes later when he parried Hikaru Minegishi’s effort and Ott threatened to claim a second for Ceres, only to shoot across the face of goal.
Ceres were clinging on to their lead as substitute Adisak Kraisorn steered his header wide before Heberty sent his free-kick marginally off target and Adisak went closer still, somehow directing his diving effort wide from close range.
Port FC continued to press with Tanasith Siripala seeing his shot blocked by an increasingly desperate Ceres defence as the home side racked up more and more opportunities, but they could not find a way past Muller and Ceres prevailed.
