Looking back at Real Madrid’s 2014 match-up against Liverpool

The 2018 Champion’s League Final between Real Madrid and Liverpool will be one to remember. Let’s take a look back four years ago when these two teams met each other last.

Real Madrid last met Liverpool in group B of the 2014/2015 campaign. Los Blancos were able to humble their opponents at both Anfield and the Santiago Bernabéu. Winning 3-0 away and 1-0 at home, respectively.
Real Madrid was the strong favorite to win the group featuring Liverpool, FC Basel, and Ludogorets Razgrad. Real Madrid eventually finished with 18 points in the group stage, toppling Liverpool’s measly 7 points.
In the 3-0 away win, we saw Cristiano Ronaldo light up the match with a tough lob over Mignolet to make it 1-0. Following Ronaldo up was Benzema with a fantastic header into the far corner making things 2-0. Benzema was able to find the goal yet again after Liverpool scrambled to clear the ball away making it a tidy 3-0 win.
Making this win even more remarkable was the fact that they were able to get all three goals in under 17 minutes.
In the home leg, Real Madrid was able to wrap things up with another Benzema goal, and was able to hang onto that goal lead 1-0. These games were absolutely dominated by Real Madrid, proving why they are European champions.
Overall, the Champion’s League series is tied between the two. The 2009 legs saw Liverpool win twice, while the 2014 legs favored Real Madrid.
