Evergrande in Crisis as CSL Breaks for the World Cup: The Chinese Football Podcast

The fixture pile-up is over and a long break from domestic action approaches – the pod survey the CSL battlefield and call out the sides who’ve impressed and disappointed relative to expectations so far.
Guangzhou Evergrande’s imploding season is the biggest news this week – off the pace in the league and out of domestic and Asian cup competitions, is Fabio Cannavaro up to the job and just what can chairman Xu Jianyin do with his pledged revolution to refresh this aging squad?
With Shanghai International Port Group joining Evergrande and Shenhua in exiting the AFC Champions League early, the panel throw their weight behind Tianjin Quanjian’s hopes as the sole remaining representative – there’s the chance to discuss just why Chinese sides are foundering in Asia, and the experts reiterate why both the ACL and next year’s Asian Cup are important for the game’s standing in China.
There’s also time for some listener questions, praise for Guoan and Shandong, and confusion as to why Guizhou are so far adrift at the bottom – and where do Hebei go from here after parting with Pellegrini? Lots of questions, and plenty of answers await.
The Chinese Football Podcast is hosted by Wild East Football’s Steve Crooks, joined by Chinese football experts Brandon Chemers in Beijing and Cameron Wilson in Shanghai.
