Chicago Fire 4, Seattle Sounders 1 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

After a contentious first half, the Chicago Fire pulled away in the second half to defeat the Seattle Sounders 4-1 at a sold-out Toyota Park on Saturday night.

The Fire got on the board in the 25th minute via a penalty kick earned and converted by Nemanja Nikolic during a wild sequence (see below), but Seattle's Clint Dempsey tied up the score just three minutes later. Chicago re-took the lead at the hour mark through David Accam and Luis Solignac added an insurance tally for the hosts before Nikolic got his second of the night to seal the win and move to the top of the MLS scoring chart.

Sounders defender Joevin Jones picked up two yellow cards late in the game to reduce the visitors to 10 men, adding to their woes on the night.

Three Things

1. STATEMENT WIN? This match had the air of a special occasion for the Fire, as the crowds turned out for the primetime national television game, and the home side did not disappoint. It was only the second win all-time for Chicago over Seattle in MLS play, the only other victory coming in July 2015. And with the mix of holdovers from last year and before to go with the newcomers on this season's squad, the victory could put the rest of MLS on notice that this Chicago Fire team is finally for real.
2. FIRST HALF CONTROVERSY: While the Fire thoroughly won the second half, the Sounders can make a good case for some calls going against them in the first half. While the penalty call itself will likely fall along partisan lines, the encroachment call on the first penalty take, when Stefan Frei saved Accam's tame penalty effort, looked to be dubious with the benefit of replays and freeze-frame photos. Add to that two shouts the Sounders had for penalties that went begging, against Jordan Morris in the first half and Dempsey in the second, and it's not a stretch to say that the first half, and subsequent game, could have gone very, very different for Seattle.
3. SCORING FREELY: Arguably one of the hardest roles to fill on any soccer team is finding a consistent scorer. The Fire seem to have one in Nikolic. The Hungarian international is tied atop the MLS Golden Boot chart with Houston's Erick "Cubo" Torres with eight goals, and is on a run of four goals in his last three games. And with Accam continuing to contribute and Solignac -- not known as a prolific scorer in the past -- tallying as well, the Fire may have the makings of a consistently potent attack.

New England Revolution 4, Real Salt Lake 0 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

The New England Revolution hadn't won a game in more than a month, and returning home against struggling Real Salt Lake represented a golden opportunity to change that. And on a rainy, gloomy night in Foxborough, Massachusetts, the Revs took full advantage of that opportunity, pummeling RSL, 4-0 at Gillette Stadium.

Scott Caldwell got New England started early, knocking home a low cross from Diego Fagundez in the fourth minute. Kei Kamara, returning to the lineup following the birth of his son, doubled the Revs' lead in the 18th, and Fagundez made it 3-0 in the 34th. Lee Nguyen made it 4-0 before halftime, finishing a pass from Kamara as the Revs ended a five-game winless streak. For depleted RSL, the loss was their fourth straight.

Three Things

1. CRUSH THEIR SPIRIT: When you're up against a weakened opponent, one you know you should beat, what you need is a fast start, to take away any hope your opponent has of pulling any kind of upset. So a goal in the fourth minute was just the ticket for the Revs. Scott Caldwell did the honors for New England, but it was Diego Fagundez' tricky move to sell a back pass and then turn instead to the end line and send the cross in that created the goal. And a nice dummy by Kelyn Rowe helped, too.
2. THE GROUND UNDER THEIR FEET: This was debut of the new FieldTurf surface at Gillette Stadium and with the game played in a steady, heavy rain, the field certainly seemed to perform well. Players didn't appear to have any trouble with footing and the surface didn't look to be a factor, which is what you want, after all. 
3. HELLO, NICE TO MEET YOU: With so many players missing because of injury or U-20 National Team duty, the RSL lineup featured three midfielders making their first start of the season and one defender, Reagan Dunk, making his MLS debut. It's tough to win with that many new guys in the lineup at the same time.

Orlando City SC 2, Sporting Kansas City 2 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

Sporting Kansas City played spoilers at Orlando City Stadium on Saturday night, as Latif Blessing scored a brace in his first MLS start to earn a 2-2 draw for the visitors and force Orlando City SC to drop points at home for the first time since their new stadium opened.

Blessing opened the scoring in the ninth minute, and after Cyle Larin and Kaká scored goals three minutes apart midway through the first half, scored the equalizer in the 75th.

The 20-year old Ghanian had only played 36 minutes this season before replacing the suspended Dom Dwyer, and was in the right place at the right time on both sides of the half for tap-in goals from close range.

The draw spoils what would otherwise have been a solid effort from the home side, who had been hoping to extend their winning start in their new stadium thanks to a pair of quality first half goals, which both featured the mercurial Brazilian captain.

Orlando thought they had scored a 76th-minute winner when Jose Aja's corner kick header hit the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed after the assistant referee ruled that Will Johnson's corner kick had crossed the end line before curling back toward the penalty area.

Three Things

1. THE STREAK IS OVER, LONG LIVE THE STREAK: Orlando finally didn't win at home. After opening the season with five straight wins at their new stadium, SKC's late equalizer ruined the party. The good times are sure to continue, however, as the Lions are finally roaring from all sides. The return of Kaká to his playmaker role, the return of Jose Aja to partner Jonathan Spector in defense, and the budding partnership of Carlos Rivas and Larin up top mean more wins are surely on the horizon.
2. WHO NEEDS DOM DWYER when you've got Latif Blessing? Sure, he scored two tap-ins. Sure, the goals weren't flashy. But the young striker always seemed to be in the right place at the right time and his runs between the Orlando defense stretched the field all night long. In order for SKC to be successful this season they need the goals to come from more places than just Dwyer. With the double on Saturday, SKC have now scored two goals or more in three of their past four and things are looking up on the offensive end.
3. CLASSY KAKÁ IS OFFICIALLY BACK: The ageless wonder was simply spectacular in both of Orlando's goals. For the opener, he set up the entire opportunity with his ambitious run in midfield and his one-two passing before the ball fell to Rivas for his pinpoint delivery to Larin. In the second he showed what made him a worldwide star when he made a double touch off his chest in the box to ensure the ball fell comfortably to his right foot so he could slot inside the far post.

DC United 0, Philadelphia Union 4 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

The last team in MLS to win a game this season, the Philadelphia Union are suddenly red hot.

On Saturday night at RFK Stadium, Haris Medunjanin, Oguchi Onyewu and Fafa Picault all opened their MLS accounts to lead the Union to a 4-0 road rout of 10-man D.C. United.

Fabian Herbers added a late goal with a one-touch beauty and Philly’s backline held D.C. to just one shot on target as the Union won their second straight contest after ending a 15-match winless streak. Medunjanin also had two assists for the Union, who picked up their third straight shutout.

Luciano Acosta was sent off with a 55th-minute red card, which only added to the woes for D.C. United, who were shut out at home for the second straight week and the fourth time this season.

Three Things

1. SPREADING THE LOVE: For most of the season, CJ Sapong has carried the offensive load for Philly with seven goals. But against D.C. United, four different Union players all scored tremendous goals — a defensive midfielder (Medunjanin), a center back (Onyewu) and two wingers (Picault and Herbers). While three of those goals came after Acosta’s red card, Medunjanin had already been slicing through D.C. before they went down a man and showed the kind of offensive skills that made him the team’s top offseason acquisition. And as for Herbers’ cherry-on-top goal — just wow.

1. SHUTOUTS ON SHUTOUTS: For Onyewu, it was surely special to score his first MLS goal playing right near where he grew up, on his 35th birthday. And it also must have been nice for the towering veteran to lead an organized defensive effort for a team that now hasn’t allowed a goal in 273 minutes. That’s quite the feat considering the Union are starting something of a makeshift backline in Onyewu, rookie Jack Elliott and fullbacks Ray Gaddis and Fabinho. And it might make it difficult for two of their most prized defenders, Keegan Rosenberry and Richie Marquez, to regain their spot in the starting lineup.
2. SEEING RED: As furious as D.C. United head coach Ben Olsen was after last week’s loss to Montreal, he might be even madder about this one. The Black-and-Red fell apart late and never really threatened to score, even after inserting Patrick Mullins back into the starting lineup for the first time since March. For the season, D.C. has been outscored 18-9 and only sit one point in front of a Union team that started the year 0-4-4.

Montreal Impact 2, Columbus Crew SC 3 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

Columbus Crew SC took the lead early and let the Montreal Impact tie up the game, but rallied late to win 3-2 at Stade Saputo on Saturday courtesy of a Justin Meram hat trick.

Crew SC went on the board in the 14th minute through Meram, as his pass attempt was initially blocked, but he ran onto the deflection and blasted a one-timer past Evan Bush. Meram doubled the lead just before the half-hour mark by latching onto another deflected clearance. Ignacio Piatti scored early in the second half for Montreal, and Anthony Jackson-Hamel came off the bench to complete the comeback for the Impact. But Meram had the last laugh, as he scored a stoppage-time counterattacking goal to win the game for the visitors.

Three Things

1. MERAM CARRIES COLUMBUS: It was a game of two halves, and so Meram's dramatic winner was a bit of a surprise, but the veteran attacker showed his ability to create his own shot at Stade Saputo, and effectively did so three times. One figures he won't be paying for dinner for a good little while, as his hat trick saved his teammates' blushes in collapsing after posting a two-goal lead.
2. DZEMAILI DEBUT: The Impact will obviously be upset to concede three goals to Meram, in the process dropping all points, but the silver lining is that this was the debut of Swiss midfielder Blerim Dzemaili, the Impact's big midseason addition. He was lively in the match, and came close to scoring on several occasions, but looked like he's still getting to know his new teammates. With Dzemaili on the same page as the likes of Piatti, one expects the Impact to be more competitive in the summer run.
3. CREW SC PAY MOTHERS BACK: Mother's Day is Sunday in the United States, and Crew SC produced a lovely video of the players' mothers sending them good wishes. Of particular note is the message from Meram's mom: "Justin, you better score a goal for mama, for Mother's Day!" Looks like he did that, and then some.

Colorado Rapids 3, San Jose Earthquakes 0 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

The Colorado Rapids ended a seven-game winless streak in emphatic fashion, defeating the San Jose Earthquakes 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. 

Shkelshen Gashi put the home side up in the 29th minute when he put away a great cross from the left side by Mohammed Saeid. Dominique Badji doubled the lead just six minutes later when he caused a San Jose turnover near midfield and took the ball to the rest of the way before hitting a shot past Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham. Badji and Gashi then combined to put the game away when Badji's hard work caused another defensive mistake, this time finding Gashi alone at the top of the box to put away his second of the day.

Three Things

1. ATTACK BREAKS OUT: Coming into the game, Colorado had scored just five goals in their first eight games, and had been shut out in their last three (and four overall). What was the difference today? The Rapids switched from their customary 4-5-1 formation and went with a 4-4-2, starting Alan Gordon and Dominique Badji up top, but also with Mohammed Saeid and Shkelzen Gashi pushing up and involved in the attack. The result, the most goals Colorado has scored this year.
2. GASHI IN FORM: Gashi – who led Colorado with nine goals last year – had struggled finding his form through the first two months of this season. Making only his fifth start of the year, he scored his first two goals of the season, finding his way on the end of two good plays from his teammates. 
3. DEFENSE COMES THROUGH: The attack may get the headlines, but Colorado also put in one of their more complete defensive displays of the year. Though not necessarily in a dirty fashion, the Rapids were the more aggressive side when the game was still being decided, whistled for 12 fouls to San Jose's two in the first half – and taking a 2-0 lead into the break. The shutout – and win – were only the second for Colorado this year, and the first of each since the season opener when they defeated New England 1-0 on March 4.
