Tunisia international Ali Maaloul revealed how changing his position was crucial for kicking-off his professional career and said that Al Ahly is one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Maaloul became an instant here among for Al Ahly fans since joining them in 2016, having won five trophies including three Egyptian Premier Leagues, two Egyptian Super Cups and the Egypt Cup.
Talking to Al Ahly TV, the 30-year-old explained why he changed his position on the field as a youngster and how it gave him a chance at professional football.
“My youth coaches at CS Sfaxien advised to change my position and play as a left-back instead of on attacking midfielder or a left winger,”
“They taught me how to play in my new position and I kept training until I was able to play as a left-back. I was then immediately promoted to the first team.
Maaloul then talked about one of his footballing mentors, Abdelkerim Nafti, who was plying his trade for the Black and Whites during Maaloul’s first two years with the senior side.
He continued by saying that he is proud to have signed for Al Ahly, which he believes is one of the biggest clubs on the planet.
“I have a lot of respect and appreciation to former CSS player Abdelkerim Nafti, I even named my son Karim after him, he always wanted me to play in Europe.
“I now play at Al Ahly, one of the biggest clubs in Africa and the world. And with time it has been proven to me that joining the Al Ahly family was the right decision,” he concluded.
The 2019 Al Ahly player of the Year was on the verge of having yet another spectacular season with the Reds.
Before all football activities were halted due to the coronavirus, he had helped his side sit 16 points clear on top of the league table and were in the CAF Champions League semis. Maaloul made 12 direct goal contributions along the way (five goals and seven assists), across all competitions.
