The report goes on to claim that United have already 'started negotiations' to sign the player as they attempt to crack the transfer window early doors.
According to Fox Sports, the club sent scouts to Benfica's Europa League game against Galatasaray earlier this year to watch the 19-year-old attacking midfielder in action.
United have also been linked with a move for Swansea winger Daniel James in recent days, but this latest rumour involving a far bigger name will certainly go down well with supporters.

Described as 'the next Cristiano Ronaldo' by many, Felix is arguably most wanted teenager in the game right now, with The Mirror reporting back in February that Manchester United and PSG were the two sides chasing his signature.
But in a shock twist at the time, Premier League side Wolves have also been linked with Benfica's hottest prospect.
According to Dean Jones of Bleacher Report, there is hope that with Jorge Mendes involved, something can be negotiated.
Of course, Wolves currently have the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Rui Patricio in their ranks, so the prospect of Felix settling in at Molineux is certainly plausible.
It must be noted that Felix is also represented by super agent Jorge Mendes, who could be in line for his latest massive pay day.
One thing is for certain, the transfer saga involving this talented teen will be an interesting one.
