The Portland Timbers got goals from Jeremy Ebobisse and Dairon Asprilla, and held the San Jose Earthquakes scoreless, recording a 2-0 win at Providence Park on Wednesday night to advance to the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16.
Ebobisse notched his first goal of 2018 — the lone goal of the first half — to open the match scoring in the 28th minute. Asprilla got his goal in the 67th minute on a play that owed much to Diego Chara, who capped a 30-yard solo run upfield with a smart cross-field pass to Asprilla for the finish.
Despite some late-game chances courtesy of Danny Hoesen and Quincy Amarikwa, the Quakes were unable to get themselves on the scoreboard. Despite outshooting Portland 13-12, San Jose could only place a single shot on target.
