‘Firmino Competition Good for Me’ Says Gabriel Jesus

Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus says the competition provided by Roberto Firmino for the number 9 spot is good for him. Currently, the City forward is the Seleção’s first choice upfront, with Firmino in reserve.

Jesus captained the side in their 2-0 friendly win over Croatia on Sunday, but Firmino came off the bench to score the second goal at Anfield. But the 20-year old insists the competition helps him to work harder.

“This question of Firmino is good for me, for Brazil,” the 21-year-old explained in his press conference. “Not only (to create competition) for the striker position, but all of them. He wants to play and that makes me want to improve too.

“Since I started as a professional at Palmeiras I always had to fight for my position. It was like that in 2015, when I became professional. Palmeiras had signed more than 15 players and I was scared. But then I took the challenge, that was good for me because I made the extra effort.”
