Rumor: Sami Khedira Linked to Red Bulls, NYCFC, LA Galaxy

by ANTHONY J. MERCED
World Cup winner and star midfielder for Juventus Sami Khedira appears to be MLS bound according to the publication Calcio Mercato.
The teams potentially interested are the usual cast of characters: New York Red Bulls, New York City FC and the LA Galaxy.
Khedira, 29, has played in 29 games for Juventus since joining the team from Real Madrid in 2015. He played a major role in their double trophy winning season last year and has garnered three goals and ten assists in 2016. Before this, Khedira spent five years with Real Madrid where he played over 100 games. The former Stuttgart man was a major part in Jose Mourinho’s overhaul of Los Blancos but fell out of favor with future managers as his tenure came to a close.
The move may seem more logical for NYCFC who have lost two major midfield players in Frank Lampard and Andoni Iraola. Combined with the aging Andrea Pirlo, the move could set the team’s midfield for the foreseeable future. NYCFC came into the league as major players in the transfer market but have since mentioned their plan may be to look within in the future. Still, Khedira being only 29-years-old is the kind of signing that could keep in line with the attempt at making the blue side of New York a bit younger.
For the New York Red Bulls, the move is a bit more complicated. Khedira’s ability to move forward and play an aggressive midfield is exactly what they currently have in Sacha Kljestan. However, the same could have been said for Felipe Martins, who has fit in quite well next to Dax McCarty. From there New York has a very busy midfield with options falling all the way down the depth chart to their successful USL team.
The third team involved is the LA Galaxy. After a chaotic off-season that now sees the league’s most prominent team in rebuild mode, a pick-up like Khedira could solidify them for years to come. They are big spenders and with LAFC just around the corner, a player like Sami Khedira could keep them in the spotlight.
