Jermoe Boateng was turned inside-out for Rostov's first and gave away a second-half penalty in a night to forget for the central defender
Bayern Munich were stunned by Rostov on a freezing cold night in Russia as their hopes of topping Champions League Group D were crushed by a shocking defensive display.
Carlo Ancelotti's side were already assured of progression to the last 16 but needed to win to deny Atletico Madrid the chance to secure top spot with a win over PSV Eindhoven later on Wednesday night.
The German champions were without the injured Manuel Neuer and Arjen Robben, while Thomas Muller, David Alaba, Matts Hummels and Xabi Alonso were all rested from the side that lost at Dortmund on Saturday.
Bayern took the lead on 36 minutes when a weak clearance from Navas fell straight to Douglas Costa, who finished emphatically into the roof of the net from just inside the area.
Costa undid his good work less than 10 minutes later though when his misplaced pass towards Holger Badstuber was intercepted by Dmitry Poloz, who played in Sardar Azmuin for the equaliser with less than two minutes to play until half-time.
Azmuin was composure personified as he put Jerome Boateng on his backside, before slotting past stand-in goalkeeper Sven Ulreich.
Things got even worse for Bayern four minutes after the restart and Boateng was at fault again, bringing down Christian Noboa to hand Poloz a chance from the spot which he converted.
Juan Bernat fired home the equaliser from close range to cap an excellent move less than three minutes later and it looked like the visitors had finally warmed up in the -4 degrees Celsius conditions.
But with 66 minutes played Noboa was at the centre of things again, clipping home a free-kick on the edge of the area to make it 3-2.
Substitute Muller missed a great chance to equalise for the visitors but in the end it was to be a famous night for the Russian side.
