Tottenham Hotspur's £16 million bid for Gerson turned down by Flamengo

The 23-year-old Brazilian has impressed for Flamengo this season and has forced himself back into the Brazil National Team picture with his form.

Flamengo box-to-box midfielder Gerson is the subject of a failed £16m from Tottenham Hotspur, according to Goal.

Spurs are known to have been long-term admirers in the 23-year-old, and reportedly viewed him last summer as an alternative to record signing Tanguy Ndombele. 

However, shortly after the Ndombele deal was completed, Gerson escaped his nightmare spell at AS Roma in a deal worth €11.8m - making him the most expensive Brazilian player to be signed by a Brazilian club.

Reigniting his career at Flamengo, Gerson has recaptured the form that once made him one of the world's most exciting prospects and he once again is the centre of scouting assignments for some of Europe's biggest clubs.

The former Fiorentina loanee has shown tremendous loyalty in his career so far, choosing to sign for Roma over Barcelona purely because Roma were offering his club at the time Fluminense more money - money that the club desperately needed.

On top of that, despite his nightmare spell at Roma, he worked hard to force his way into their plans, before being forced out of the club and back to his homeland where he now seems comfortable.

Furthermore, it has been reported that he is set to join Flamengo Head Coach Jorge Jesus in staying at the club for one more season at least and does not have his heart set on a move away from Rio de Janeiro.

What could Gerson offer?

Gerson is a 5'9" left footed attack-minded central midfielder, with the versatility to operate as an inside forward on the right wing.

Providing five goal contributions in 27 matches in the 2019 Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A - two goals and three assists, Gerson has the ability to get involved in the attack with runs from deep, clever tight-threaded through-balls and the ability to strike from long-range effectively. 

Comparisons can be drawn between Gerson and Harry Winks in the way they dribble out of trouble, play neat and simple passes but also have the ability to play a crafty long-range over-the-top through ball.

Winks is definitely less attack-minded than Gerson, and Jose Mourinho may in this respect view Gerson as an upgrade on the England international - but even with the potential addition of Gerson, he would still face the fact that there are the likes of Ndombele, Gedson Fernandes as well as Winks and young prospect Harvey White competing for the box-to-box starting spot.

Alternative options similar to Gerson

When researching Gerson, multiple websites including Transfermarkt drew comparisons to Sporting Lisbon midfielder Wendel.

Another young Brazilian midfielder, the 22-year-old is valued by Transfermarkt at just over £7 million, and could be a much cheaper alternative to Gerson.

Wendel, slightly taller than Gerson at 5'11", is another Fluminense graduate who has this season scored twice and assisted one in just 19 appearances.

One alternative option that Spurs fans may be aware of is former Leeds United prospect Ronaldo Vieira, who currently plays at Sampdoria in Italy. 

The England U21 international has become a regular at Sampdoria this campaign, making 24 appearances in all competitions this season and assisting three goals in the process. 

Vieira could contribute to the homegrown in nation registration rule that Spurs need to comply to, making this alternative a huge plus, but no move for the young star has been rumoured as of yet.

Additional alternative options but less plausible ones at that include FC Nantes starlet Ludovic Blas, Borussia Moenchengladbach and Slovakia creative force Lászlo Bénes, and Brighton and Hove Albion and one time Spurs transfer target Yves Bissouma.

В одной из них Тотовицкий выкатывал мяч в центр штрафной под удар Филиппову, но ситуацию спас Тарас Степаненко, в подкате опередивший форварда. В середине тайма из-за жары командам дали паузу на водопой, а сразу после «оранжево-черные» заработали пенальти. Мостовой сыграл рукой в своей штрафной, исполнять одиннадцатиметровый взялся Марлос, однако Паст угадал и отразил удар. Впрочем, хавбек «оранжево-черных» грустил недолго и уже в следующей атаке забил: Алан Патрик отдал в штрафную, где Марлос разобрался с оппонентами и покатил мяч низом в самый угол – 2:0. Не ушли на перерыв без забитого мяча и футболисты «Десны» – на 32-й минуте мяч попал в руку Матвиенко, и Фаворов с пенальти был точен. Концовка тайма осталась за подопечными Луиша Каштру, но ни Тайсон, ни Алан Патрик, ни Фернандо свои моменты не реализовали.

Едва стартовала вторая половина, как «оранжево-черные» вернули себе комфортное преимущество в два мяча. Фернандо ударом завершал контратаку, Паст парировал, но первым на добивании был Марлос – 3:1. «Десне» вновь пришлось перестраиваться тактически, но найти моменты у ворот Трубина не удавалось. На темпе игры сказывалась и усталость, а потому наставники освежали команды заменами, и у «Шахтера» на поле появились Коноплянка, Пихаленок, Тете, Соломон и Мораес. В заключительные десять минут резко активизировались гости: Гитченко бил головой с нескольких метров, но мяч попал в штангу, а на 88-й минуте Будковский перехватил пас назад, переиграл вратаря и сократил разницу в счете до минимума. Уже в компенсированное время Соломон мог снимать все вопросы, но с 8 метров не попал в ближний угол, а Фаворову представился шанс принести своей команде ничью, однако из выгодной позиции также пробил мимо. 
 
3:2 – «Шахтер» в зрелищном поединке одержал верх над «Десной» и продолжает путь к досрочному чемпионству. Героем матча вновь становится Марлос, оформивший второй дубль за неделю.

"Bild" diz que a final da Champions vai ser mesmo em Lisboa

Jornal alemão garante que a decisão da UEFA já está tomada e que a capital portuguesa vai mesmo receber a final da Liga dos Campeões

Depois dos ventos de Espanha, é da Alemanha que chega mais um sinal de que o que resta da Liga dos Campeões poderá mesmo jogar-se em Lisboa.

De acordo com o diário "Bild", a UEFA já escolheu Lisboa como anfitriã dos quartos de final, meias-finais e final, depois de Istambul mostrar-se pouco interessada em receber a final sem público.

A federação alemã terá puxado pela solução Frankfurt e Moscovo era também uma hipótese, muito mais remota devido ao grande número de casos de covid-19 na Rússia.

A decisão oficial será anunciada depois da reunião do comité executivo da UEFA, a 17 de junho.

Durante esta semana, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa já tinha deixado a entender que Lisboa poderia receber um grande evento de futebol internacional em agosto.

A torcida do Sport conheceu os novos uniformes da temporada 2020 na noite deste sábado (30). Em transmissão no Youtube, dois convidados rubro-negros, o cantor e compositor Lenine e o humorista Rodrigo Marques, animaram o lançamento devidamente trajados com as camisas. Em paralelo, o público poderia acessar as redes sociais da fornecedora Umbro e do clube para observar os padrões com mais detalhes. No final, ainda houve a aparição surpresa do ex-atacante e ídolo Carlinhos Bala.

Rodrigo Marques foi o primeiro convidado a participar da transmissão e relembrou memórias cômicas nos dias que frequentava a Ilha do Retiro e tópicos relacionados ao Leão. Ele ainda soltou uma demonstração do que estava por vir, quando ficou trajado com o uniforme do goleiro e o padrão número dois. Minutos depois, os perfis do Sport e da Umbro lançaram as imagens oficiais.

O segundo uniforme mantém a tradição da cor branca, mas contém as mangas pretas e detalhes em dourado ao redor no corpo da camisa. A camisa de goleiro é a mais "alternativa". Com detalhes abstratos em branco e amarelo, o tom azul predomina a vestimenta.

Maior estrela da noite, Lenine trouxe sucessos da carreira para conduzir a apresentação, como ‘Hoje eu Quero Sair Só’, ‘Paciência’ e 'Leão do Norte'. Antes disso, ele mostrou em primeira mão o padrão rubro-negro. Vale lembrar, no entanto, que houve o vazamento na sexta-feira (29) das três camisas. O preto volta a prevalecer no uniforme titular, sem esquecer do vermelho em três listras alternadas.

Essa é a segunda temporada consecutiva que a Umbro veste o Leão. Desta vez, as camisas carregam símbolos de alusão aos 115 anos do Clube, completados no último dia 13, e estão disponíveis no site da loja oficial do clube.

20,000 fans could be allowed to attend the FA Cup final at Wembley on August 1.

As reported by The Mirror, the FA are exploring plans to possibly allow 10,000 supporters from each of the two clubs to watch the game at the 90,000 capacity stadium.

However, the report indicates that such a scenario could only occur if the coronavirus infection rate is below 0.5 by the time the game takes place.

While fans won't be able to attend any Premier League games in the remainder of the season, there is hope that the situation could be different for the FA Cup final, especially given the large capacity of Wembley.

A football administrator told The Mirror: 'Fans will be allowed back to see sport at some stage – not just in football.

'We already know there's no chance of grounds opening up and being filled to capacity.

'But discussions have taken place about a phased return of spectators when Government health advice allows.

'That will be in smaller, manageable numbers at first and Wembley would seem a good place to start as it's the country's biggest stadium.'

If some fans were allowed to attend the final it would provide an indication as to whether some supporters could be permitted to attend Premier League games next season. 

There are eight teams remaining in the FA Cup this season. In the quarter-finals Leicester will take on Chelsea, while Newcastle will be up against Manchester City.

The other two ties see Sheffield United play Arsenal and Norwich in action versus Manchester United.
