Tottenham, who are going through a rough stretch, desperately need a big performance this Wednesday. The factors seem to be in favor of them doing so. They are at home, and are taking on the worst team in the competition as of now, the newly-promoted Norwich.

It’s so unlike of Jose Mourinho to not have his team in the top-most tier. Given that he was given the charge of the squad just a while back, but still, several match-days after, he has failed to show a clear influence of his arrival.

Tottenham management have already shown their willingness to cut short a contract with a manager that took them till the cusp of European glory last season, and Jose should not expect any less of a treatment if he fails to deliver.

Tottenham were held to a 0-0 draw on the road by the in-form Watford the last match-day. It was more of a relief for the Spurs, as Troy Deeney failed to convert the penalty awarded for his team.

Elsewhere, Norwich recorded a much-needed win the prior game week. However, they were at home, and had taken on the worst team in the league other than themselves, Bournemouth.

As things stand this Wednesday, Spurs are the overwhelming favorites. First and foremost they are one of the elite teams in England, and had made a run to the final of the Champions League last season. On top of that the team have the home advantage too.

On the other hand, Norwich were plying their trade in the lower division the prior season, and are the dead-last placed team in the PL as of now. They also have to wade through the away handicap this game week.

In addition, not only are they the 20th placed team in the table, but Norwich also are the worst team on the road, and have conceded the most number of goals in the league. 

Moreover, the Spurs recorded wins in three of the previous five h2h clashes, and drew one. They also managed to score twice or more in four of these five match-ups, and at this venue, recorded a combined scoreline of 5-0 from the prior two h2h encounters.

Furthermore, this past two decades, only once have Norwich won at Tottenham’s home ground, and the sole victory had come eight years back.

Considering all these observations, it’s adjudged that the hosts Tottenham are the clear favorites to deliver the three points this Wednesday.

Kenyan midfielder training with Georgian side

Ex-Kenya U20 midfielder John Macharia is training with Georgian Liga2 side FC Rustavi with the aim of securing a deal before the season Kick-Off slated for March.

Macharia featured for Guria in the same league last season and failed to renew his contract with the team he joined from Kolkheti Pohti.

Speaking to Futaa from Georgia, Macharia said:” Iv been training with Rustavi since the start of the year and I'm confident that things will be okay. Everything has gone well in the sessions and I hope we can finalize things soon.”

Asked why he chose the team despite having had a reputation in the country’s top-flight league, Macharia intimated that they could get promoted to the top flight should one of the teams be demoted.

“There is a team whose fate lies with the league body due to some financial problems. If they are liquidated, then Rustavi will be promoted. That apart I think the plans they (Rustavi) have for the season is something I buy into and I hope to be part of it,” Macharia said.

Macharia moved to Georgia in 2017 where he was snapped by Pohti from National Super League side FC Talanta; the club having been home to midfielder Amos Nondi (now at Dila Gori) and Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma (now at AIK)

Official: Julian Gressel traded from Atlanta United to DC United in blockbuster deal

TUESDAY, 3:45 ET: The two clubs announced the transaction on Thursday afternoon with Atlanta receiving $650,000 in 2020 Targeted Allocation Money, $100,000 in 2021 Targeted Allocation Money for Gressel. Additionally, Atlanta can receive up to $350,000 in TAM if Gressel meets certain performance-based metrics with D.C. United.

“We’re excited to bring a player of Julian’s quality and pedigree to the club ahead of the 2020 season,” said D.C. GM and VP of soccer operations Dave Kasper in a statement. "He has impressed throughout his time in MLS and has been a major component to Atlanta’s success in the league since 2017. Last year, he led Atlanta in assists and chances created while also scoring eight goals so we’re looking forward to adding his impressive goal creating ability and eye for goal to our roster in 2020 and beyond."

“We want to thank Julian for his service to our club over the past three seasons,” said Atlanta United VP and technical director Carlos Bocanegra. “Coming out of college, Julian played an important role in building our team and helping the club win three major trophies. We wish him luck in his future.”

TUESDAY, NOON ET: Julian Gressel’s public contract dispute with Atlanta United has reached a climax, with the midfielder reportedly traded Tuesday to fellow Eastern Conference club D.C. United for $1 million in allocation money, according to Steven Goff of The Washington Post.

Gressel, 24, had 15 goals and 35 assists in 98 matches (88 starts) across the last three seasons. The 2017 MLS Rookie of the Year was a jackknife of sorts for the Five Stripes, playing wide right and centrally as they won MLS Cup in 2018 and captured Campeones Cup and U.S. Open Cup titles in 2019.

As Atlanta opened preseason camp last week ahead of their Feb. 18 Concacaf Champions League opener against Honduran side Motagua, Gressel advocated for a quick resolution.

“I’ve said something about it in the past. That stands, that’s valid. There’s nothing really to add at the moment,” Gressel told media last week. “Obviously I want a resolution to this as soon as possible, but that’s for my agent and the club to work out. I don’t want this to be hanging over our heads here in preseason. I don’t think that’s fair to our club and our team, and I especially don’t think it’s fair to our teammates.”

The addition gives the Black-and-Red a major boost heading into 2020, with Gressel and Peruvian midfielder Edison Flores newly-acquired pieces for the era succeeding stars Wayne Rooney and Luciano Acosta.

As for Atlanta, a vital piece of the club’s first three MLS seasons now departs. Difference-makers in midfield such as Ezequiel Barco, Pity Martinez and Emerson Hyndman remain, but there’s a big hole nonetheless. This would also mark Atlanta's second major allocation haul via trade this offseason, after Darlington Nagbe was sent to Columbus Crew SC for $1,050,000 million. 

Gressel made over $114,000 in 2019, according to MLS Players Association figures, though Goff reports that figure could increase six-fold in D.C.

SC BRAGA AFASTA SPORTING E ESTÁ NA FINAL (2-1)

O SC Braga está na final da Taça da Liga, após ter batido, esta terça-feira, o Sporting, por 2-1.

Ricardo Horta (8’) e Paulinho (90’) marcaram para a equipa de Rúben Amorim, com Mathieu (60’) a empatar pelo meio para os leões, que jogaram reduzidos a 10 na última meia-hora por expulsão de Bolasie. Já nos descontos, também o defesa-central francês foi expulso por Nuno Almeida por agressão a Ricardo Esgaio. Após grande confusão junto aos bancos, Eduardo e Borja também viram vermelho direto.

Esta será a terceira final do SC Braga nesta competição, depois de ter vencido em 2013 e perdido em 2017.

Quatro jogos, quatro vitórias. O SC Braga continua imparável desde que Rúben Amorim assumiu o comando técnico e é o primeiro finalista da Taça da Liga, após bater um Sporting fragilizado e de cabeça perdida. Os guerreiros chegaram rapidamente à vantagem e a partir daí controlaram as incidências, mostrando um futebol bem mais interessante do que a equipa 'leonina', que, ainda assim, conseguiu o empate antes do descanso.

A expulsão de Bolasie deixou o Sporting a jogar para chegar ao desempate por penáltis, enquanto os minhotos voltaram a sufocar e foram felizes em cima dos 90 minutos. Paulinho voltou a marcar a um 'grande', apenas quatro dias depois de ter gelado o Dragão, e Mathieu, autor do golo leonino, foi o exemplo do descontrolo emocional da equipa, que fica de fora de mais uma prova interna.

Rúben Amorim fez três alterações em relação à partida que venceu no Dragão, com Palhinha (impedido por estar cedido pelo Sporting), Wilson Eduardo e Trincão a darem lugar a João Novais, Ricardo Horta e Galeno. No lado do Sporting, o regresso de Coates já era esperado – tinha falhado o clássico devido a castigo – pelo que a principal surpresa foi a presença de Battaglia e Doumbia no meio-campo, com Silas a mudar aquilo que tem sido o seu onze base.

Os minhotos entraram a todo o gás, e depois de um primeiro aviso de Paulinho (3’), não tiveram de esperar muito tempo para chegarem à vantagem: recuperação de bola do SC Braga, com Fransérgio a lançar Ricardo Horta na esquerda (8’), e este a finalizar com um belo remate em arco.

Depois do golo, a equipa de Rúben Amorim foi baixando um pouco as suas linhas, apostando sobretudo nas transições rápidas, o que permitiu ao Sporting equilibrar o jogo. Aos 31' Matheus desviou para canto um remate de Rafael Camacho, e quando faltava um minuto para o intervalo, os 'leões' chegaram ao empate: falta cobrada rapidamente por Bruno Fernandes a isolar Mathieu, que fez de ponta de lança e atirou de pé esquerdo para o fundo das redes.
