Liverpool vs Chelsea Preview: Blues look to seal Champions League place

Chelsea  preview the Premier League game at Anfield which could all but secure Champions League football for Frank Lampard in his debut season at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea play Liverpool on Wednesday night with their quest for Champions League glory nearing its conclusion.  

Liverpool may have already wrapped the league title up, but they will not want to lose. The Merseyside club will be lifting the trophy after the game, they will not want a loss on their historic day.  

Chelsea will be confident heading up north after the F.A. Cup semi-final win over Manchester United on Sunday. The 3-4-3 formation is likely to be selected after it successfully combatted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s counterattacking style. 

Earlier meetings 

Frank Lampard’s side have faced Liverpool three times this season. Jurgen Klopp’s side won in the UEFA Super Cup on penalties and the Premier League game at Stamford Bridge after the 2-1 victory. Chelsea beat The Reds in the F.A. Cup quarterfinal 2-0. 

The West London club have only won one against Liverpool in their past five meetings. The last Premier League win came in 2018 when Olivier Giroud scored the only goal of the game. 

Chelsea last won a league game at Anfield six years ago in 2014. Also, in 2014, the infamous Steven Gerrard slip occurred. This remains one of the most famous bouts between the two sides in recent years due to the implications it caused on the top flight title, this was part of the failed attempt to win the league from a Liverpool perspective, who were in pole position for a majority of that season.

Lampard’s side have won most of their games since football restarted.

There have been a few hurdles in the form. The losses to The Hammers and The Blades highlighted areas for improvements but the chance of top four stays in the hands of Chelsea. 

Liverpool’s form has halted since they were declared Premier League champions for the very first time.

The loss to Manchester City did not mean anything in terms of the table, but it shows how much Liverpool have dropped off their intensity.

It is likely that Lampard will match up with the same side that played in the F.A. Cup at the weekend. The pressing style worked, and the 3-4-3 formation prevented the counterattack. Liverpool will come with a similar counterattacking style when Chelsea lose the ball in the final third. 

Lampard will have options off the bench too. Christian Pulisic did not start on Sunday due to a minor injury. If he does not make the 11, his impact off the bench could be important.  

This game has implications for both sides. If Lampard overcomes Klopp, his side have all but secured Champions League football. Whereas the new champions will not want to lose on their trophy day.

A wall of noise greeted Jose Mourinho's champions-to-be back in 2005. One of the most famous Anfield nights ended in controversy as Chelsea were unable to break through Liverpool's resolute defence backed so strongly by the voices on the Kop.

Luis Garcia's early winner  - now known as the ghost goal - did not appear to have crossed the line, but it won Liverpool the tie and eventually their fifth European Cup.

The match began a fierce rivalry between the two teams who met repeatedly in Europe in the following years.

4. Chelsea 2-1 Liverpool, 2003

Ever wandered what so much of Chelsea's recent success may well have depended upon? Well, perhaps a slipping Dane could let you know.

The two teams went into the final day of the season both with a chance of qualifying for the final spot in the Champions League.

Many believe the result persuaded Roman Abramovich to buy the fashionable club on the Kings Road, rather than bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

A number of Chelsea fans have cited this as a day they knew silverware was on the way. After 27 years without a major trophy, Chelsea's 1997 FA Cup win finally spelled success.

The fourth round tie is remembered as one of the loudest nights Stamford Bridge has ever heard, despite only 27,000 in the ground that night due to the redevelopment of the famous Shed End.

An opening salvo from Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore stunned the Bridge, but a second half comeback from Chelsea gave them momentum all the way to the final.

Mark Hughes, Gianfranco Zola and a brace from Gianluca Vialli shocked the visitors.

2. Chelsea 4-4 Liverpool, 2009

A number of Champions League ties between the two could have made this list, but perhaps this eight-goal thriller is the most memorable of all.

A superlative 3-1 win at Anfield brought the Blues back to London with one eye on the semi-final against Barcelona, but Europe's comeback kings would just not lie down.

A clever Fabio Aurelio free kick and a Xabi Alonso penalty meant the visitors were in touching distance at half time.

But Chelsea roared back in style, bringing the game to 3-2. Goals from Lucas Leiva and Dirk Kuyt put Liverpool within reach again, before Frank Lampard finally sealed things with his second of the game.

The pick of the goals came from Chelsea's Brazilian centre back Alex. His thumping free kick roared past Pepe Reina in to the net from 30 yards.

Could any other game be top of this list? It is one Chelsea fans still sing about and one Liverpool fans look back on in horror.

Brendan Rodgers' side had steamed to the top of the league and their attacking prowess was devastating all who faced them.

The then Chelsea boss produced a typical tactical masterclass with an injury-laden squad that stifled Liverpool.

One of football's most infamous moments occurred on the stroke of half time as reds captain Steven Gerrard slipped, allowing Demba Ba through on goal.

Chelsea went on to win the match 2-0 and spoil the title party on Merseyside.

Road to Success: Can Chelsea compete with Liverpool?

The Blues play at Anfield later today.

As the season draws to a close, it has been very clear for some time now that Liverpool are the best team in the country.

Their Premier League winning campaign has been nothing short of immense and they secured the title with seven games to spare, with a helping hand from Chelsea.

Jürgen Klopp has now managed to build a side that has won both the Champions League and the league title within just two seasons.

It therefore raises a question; can anyone catch them?

VAVEL looks into what Chelsea need to do in order to compete with Liverpool in the next few seasons.

• Solidifying the defence

One of the key factors in Liverpool’s title win has been the presence of Virgil van Dijk in the heart of their defence.

He joined from Southampton in 2018 and within two seasons at the Reds, he is now arguably the best defender in the world.

In Chelsea’s case, they lack a player of his ability.

Frank Lampard has experimented with different defensive partnerships this season, with the likes of Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori, Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen all looking to be regular starters for the Blues.

Despite all of these players being top players on their day, it has been clear to see that they lack consistency and if Chelsea really want to compete at the very top soon, then they need to resolve this problem.

The Blues have recently been linked with the likes of Declan Rice according to the Express, who could prove to be a solid addition for the west London club.

• Champions League glory

It has been eight years since Chelsea won the Champions League in Munich and they have failed to reach another final since then.

On the other hand, Liverpool have featured in the last two finals of the competition and managed to win their 6^th title last year.

The Blues are already one of the biggest teams in Europe and despite winning the Europa League twice in the last decade, they really need to progress further in the Champions League to cement their place at the top.

A win for Chelsea tonight would secure them a Champions League spot for next season, which is ‘massively important’ according to Lampard: “Trying to get in the Champions League has to be a huge aim for Chelsea, even with the way this year has gone.

“It would be a big achievement for the players”.

• Attacking presence

Liverpool are lucky to have the qualities of Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in their team, who score countless numbers of goals each season for the Reds.

Ahead of next season, Chelsea have already secured the services of Timo Werner to join Tammy Abraham, Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi as Chelsea’s attackers.

As well as this, the arrival of Hakim Ziyech and potentially Kai Havertz will give Chelsea a very exciting attacking line in future seasons.

In order for them to improve and compete with Liverpool though, the need to ensure that they take their chances more often.

This season has seen Chelsea fail to win matches on many occasions as they have dominated games, but haven’t been able to secure the three points through a lack of confidence in front of goal.

If Chelsea can address all of these points and Lampard is able to build the squad he wants, then they certainly have the ability to compete with the likes of Liverpool in the future.

It is a time of change for Chelsea at the moment and if everything falls into place, then the Premier League title race could prove to be very interesting for seasons to come.

Liverpool vs Chelsea: Prediction and Line-Up

In preparation for tonight's game, Luka gives us his pre-game thoughts and predicted line up.

Chelsea come into this game looking for a huge three points that would see them secure Champions League qualification for next season.

The Blues booked their spot in the FA Cup final last Sunday when they beat Manchester United 3-1, so the team’s confidence will be very high.

Tonight they come up against a Liverpool side who, even though they’ve wrapped up the league, will be looking to get a victory in preparation for their trophy lift following the game this evening.

Frank Lampard spoke in his press conference yesterday that N’Golo Kante remains out with a hamstring injury, but Chelsea should remain confident that they can pull off a huge result tonight, even without a crucial part of their midfield.

Predicted XI

In terms of how we’ll line up tonight, here is my predicted XI below.

• As good as the 3-4-3 worked at the weekend, I think Frank will revert back to 4-3-3.
• Kepa Arrizabalaga returns.
• Marcos Alonso drops out of the defence to allow Cesar Azpilicueta to return to left back.
• It worked really well against Utd and has done multiple times this           season, so I think Frank will keep Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic in that ‘double pivot’.
• Mount starting is a given, his pressing game and work rate is crucial to the team.
• Pulisic back into the squad after he was rested at the weekend.
• Giroud remains, he’s our most inform striker at the moment. 
• I think Frank will keep Willian on the right, as much as I think he needs a rest. I would like to see Hudson-Odoi start but I think it is unlikely.

Taking advantage

I think we can pull off a result tonight, we came really close to getting a result against Liverpool in the league earlier in the season and if we can take advantage of the hosts’ poor recent form, this could be massive for us.

We certainly have the tools to cause Liverpool problems and I’m very much looking forward to tonight’s clash.
