As European leagues plan for restart, will France regret stopping football season?

With the German Bundesliga resuming next week and other leagues around Europe making preparations to restart after the coronavirus-induced suspension, could France end up regretting the decision to call an early end to its football season?

That is the fear of Jean-Michel Aulas, the outspoken president of Lyon who had hoped Ligue 1 could still be played to a conclusion despite last week's announcement by the French Prime Minister that it "cannot restart" any time soon.

"Why rush into saying it's difficult to play before August, when we don't know if other countries are going to have the same judgement," he told sports daily L'Equipe. "We should have done the political rounds of the other four major leagues."

Instead, the French league ended the season with 10 rounds of matches unplayed, crowning Paris Saint-Germain champions, relegating the bottom two, Amiens and Toulouse, and leaving Lyon seventh, denying them European qualification.

France is not alone. The Dutch season was abandoned, and Belgium is unlikely to restart.

In contrast, the Bundesliga will return on May 16, while Turkey, Hungary, Croatia and Serbia have set out resumption dates.

Portugal is on track to resume, and Spain hopes to restart next month. The Premier League is committed to finishing the season too, although the situation in Italy is less clear even if clubs have been given the green light to train again.

"The return of the Bundesliga is great news for the football industry," said Javier Tebas, the president of Spain's La Liga.

Speaking to L'Equipe, Aulas suggested that, in contrast, French clubs now stood to lose almost 700 million euros ($755m) from ending the season early.

"I have noted almost 10 European countries where they have restarted training. So it really makes you wonder. By adapting our methods, we probably could have finished the season," he said.

- Problem of Champions League return -

Ligue 1's revenue in 2018 was barely half the Bundesliga's 3.2 billion euros according to UEFA. Nor does France compare favourably with its neighbour when it comes to the coronavirus, with nearly 26,000 confirmed deaths against 7,000 -- although deaths in the UK, Italy and Spain are all higher.

Nevertheless, it is understandable that France might measure itself against Germany. They are the two largest economies in the European Union, with the largest populations.

There have been reports that French President Emmanuel Macron wanted Europe's other leading leagues to follow France's example, but German Chancellor Angela Merkel emphatically denied that any conversations took place.

In Germany they are aware of football's importance to the economy, with the sector employing 56,000 people. "The clubs don't want to risk everything. But it's also important to get back on track for the economic survival of the clubs," Freiburg player Jonathan Schmid told AFP.

Lyon and Amiens have hinted at legal action to try to overturn the French league's decision, which may in any case have been money-motivated -- Ligue 1 has a record new television deal starting next season, so needed as much certainty as possible about when the 2020-21 campaign might begin.

UEFA is determined to reduce delays to the start of next season too, but still hopes to complete the Champions League in August. That leaves Lyon and PSG in a bind, as both risk being badly underprepared having not played since March.

PSG are into the quarter-finals, while Lyon lead Juventus 1-0 after their last 16 first leg. The Lyon women's team are also still hoping to retain their Champions League crown.

The Parisian club's president, Nasser al-Khelaifi, has even suggested a novel solution if the French government does not allow their matches to be staged on home soil.

"We will play our matches abroad subject to the best conditions for our players and the safety of all our staff," he said, but that would hardly be ideal.

KNVB verrast door ‘voorbarig’ bericht minister: ‘Ontwikkelingen gaan snel’

De KNVB is onaangenaam verrast door het bericht dat minister Hugo de Jonge van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport donderdag aan de Tweede Kamer stuurde. In deze brief stelde De Jonge dat er waarschijnlijk pas weer met publiek in stadions kan worden gevoetbald als er een vaccin is tegen het coronavirus. De verwachting is dat dit nog een jaar of langer kan duren.

De KNVB noemt de brief van De Jonge een reactie tegenover onder meer het Algemeen Dagblad en de NOS ‘geen prettige verrassing’. De voetbalbond voert inmiddels gesprekken met de overheid over de hervatting van het profvoetbal, nadat premier Mark Rutte woensdagavond tijdens een persconferentie stelde dat er per 1 september waarschijnlijk weer gevoetbald kan worden.

“We zouden het verschrikkelijk vinden als er lang niet voor publiek gevoetbald kan worden. Dit zou namelijk ten koste gaan van de sportbeleving bij de miljoenen fans en kijkers”, stelt de bond. “Bovendien zou het voor de bedrijfstak betaald voetbal opnieuw een hele zware financiële klap betekenen. Hierover zijn we ook in gesprek met de overheid, juist omdat Nederlandse clubs bovengemiddeld afhankelijk van inkomsten uit stadionbezoeken zijn. Vandaar dat de melding van vanochtend als een totale verrassing kwam.”

“Het organiseren van wedstrijden met publiek is een specialisme en specifieke voorzorgsmaatregelen op het gebied van hygiëne en crowd management dragen bij aan een veilige en verantwoorde manier waarop dit wél eerder zou kunnen”, stelt de KNVB. “Daarbij kijken we tevens nauwlettend naar wat de clubs in het buitenland doen op dit vlak. De ontwikkelingen gaan snel, daarom lijkt ons hetgeen is gemeld in deze fase nogal voorbarig.”

De KNVB kan in de komende tijd goed in het buitenland om zich heen kijken, aangezien er, zij het zonder publiek, bijvoorbeeld op korte termijn al gevoetbald gaat worden in de Bundesliga. De Vlaamse minister van Sport Ben Weyts speculeert bovendien al op voetbal met publiek in september: “Deskundigen hebben mij gevraagd dit nog in beraad te houden. Ik begrijp dat het lastig is en er terughoudendheid bestaat. Misschien zijn we iets te enthousiast. Maar het staat inderdaad bij ons op de agenda”, stelt hij in een reactie tegenover Sporza.

Antwerp legt zich neer bij de beslissingen van de Veiligheidsraad

Antwerp verzette zich het sterkst tegen een stopzetting van de competitie, maar die lijkt er straks toch met grote zekerheid te komen. Er mag immers pas vanaf 1 augustus weer competitief gevoetbald worden. De Great Old reageerde op het nieuws.

De oudste club van het land wou geen stopzetting van de competitie en kwam zelfs met een plan om vanaf 1 juli weer te voetballen. Die mag het nu opbergen door de recente ontwikkelingen. De competitie is voorbij. "Dat lijkt mij een vrij logische conclusie", aldus Sven Jaecques General Secretary & Sports bij Antwerp.

Eerste horde genomen

"Ons standpunt vooraf was duidelijk: een beslissing over de stopzetting van de competitie kan niet door de clubs genomen worden, wél door de overheid en de experts. Met dit advies van de Veiligheidsraad is er eindelijk een eerste horde genomen", ging hij verder.

Nu moet de werkgroep beslissingen nemen over de titel, het format en de Europese tickets. "Daarover gaan wij nu geen standpunt innemen. Het is beter om de rangen even te sluiten en de zaken intern aan te pakken", besloot hij.

Corona-akkoord FBO en spelersvakbonden: collectief inleveren

De werkgeversorganisatie FBO en de spelersvakbonden VVCS en ProProf hebben een akkoord bereikt over een pakket aan noodmaatregelen. Ze adviseren onder meer een collectieve salarisverlaging.

Afgesproken is dat de sterkste schouders de zwaarste lasten moet gaan dragen. Het percentage dat moet worden ingeleverd, stijgt naarmate spelers meer verdienen. Tot een jaarsalaris van vijf ton zijn er categorieën gemaakt met oplopende percentages tot 17,5 procent. Van elke euro boven de vijf ton wordt geadviseerd om twintig procent in te houden. De adviezen gelden tot en met 31 december en vervallen als er weer met publiek gespeeld kan worden.

De Eredivisie mag vanaf juni de salarissen korten, in de Eerste Divisie gaat het gelden vanaf juli. Daarnaast hebben de FBO en de vakbonden ook afspraken gemaakt over een versobering van de prestatiepremies. Normaal gesproken krijgen selecties bij kampioenschappen, plaatsting voor Europees voetbal, handhaving en promotie bonussen. De partijen hebben berekend dat de potentiële salarisbesparing op jaarbasis 35 miljoen euro zou kunnen zijn.

Salarisverlagingen en premie-afspraken kunnen niet via de cao worden verplicht. Het gaat slechts om adviezen. De verwachting is dat deze worden overgenomen door de meeste clubs. Bij PSV (twintig procent) en Willem II leverden de directies (vijftien procent) al in om het goede voorbeeld te geven. Ook Feyenoord kondigde aan dat er moet worden gesneden in de lonen. 

Het akkoord zal voor het gros van de spelers acceptabel zijn. Voor de meeste profs lijkt de schade te overzien. Met deze richtlijn van maximaal twintig procent inleveren voor de vedetten, is het voor clubs moeilijker geworden om extreme eisen te stellen. Zo moesten voetballers van Barcelona zeventig procent inleveren en zijn de salarissen van de grootverdieners in Frankrijk gehalveerd.

Verder hebben FBO, VVCS en ProProf ook de cao aangepast. Zo hoeven clubs uit de Eerste Divisie komend seizoen maar veertien contractspelers te hebben in plaats van zestien. In de seizoenen 2021/22 en 2022/23 wordt het aantal verplichte contractspelers dan weer opgevoerd naar het oude niveau. In ruil hebben de spelersvakbonden de cao met twee jaar weten te verlengen, tot 2023, waardoor garanties voor spelers - zoals de revalidatieverzekering en doorbetaling bij ziekte en arbeidsongeschiktheid - de komende jaren overeind blijven.

Over het verplichte minimum salaris voor niet-EU-spelers is afgesproken dat dit komend seizoen niet zal stijgen. Via deze regeling proberen de clubs en spelersvakbonden te voorkomen dat het betaalde voetbal wordt overspoeld met derderangs aankopen uit Zuid-Amerika en Afrika. Het niet-EU-salaris is altijd 150 procent van het gemiddelde loon in de Eredivisie en was vooral door de opgeschroefde Ajax-salarissen flink gestegen voor het seizoen 2020/21. Nu wordt het bevroren op ruim vier ton.

De FBO en de vakbonden hebben sinds het begin van de crisis dagelijks overleg en zijn de eerste partijen in het betaalde voetbal die er tijdens deze crisis in slagen om in solidariteit wat te regelen. Dat is de clubs en de KNVB nog niet gelukt. De voetbalbond stelde twee weken geleden voor dat de Europees spelende clubs 25 procent van de UEFA-premies afdragen (omdat 25 procent van de Eredivisie niet is gespeeld), maar daar gingen de topclubs niet mee akkoord. Ook een vergelijkbaar voorstel van AZ kreeg geen vervolg.

'We zijn de eerste bedrijfstak in Nederland die met een collectief salarisoffer en een aanpassing van de cao komt', zegt ProProf-directeur Ko Andriessen. 'Het betaalde voetbal komt soms in een negatief daglicht, maar hiermee lopen we voorop en dat is toch een mooi signaal. Hopelijk is dit solidaire akkoord ook een voorbode voor de vervolgoverleggen van de KNVB en clubs om tot een noodfonds te komen.'

Volgens FBO-directeur Serge Rossmeisl bewijst het akkoord 'dat iedereen binnen de voetballerij zich volledig bewust is van de ernst van de crisis' en VVCS-voorzitter Evgeniy Levchenko spreekt van 'een gegeven de omstandigheden redelijk compromis.'

Ook de trainersvakbond Coaches Betaald Voetbal heeft zich aangesloten bij de maatregelen.

Toptalent Anderlecht stelt fans gerust: "Geen intentie om te vertrekken"

Antoine Colassin is een van de vele jongeren bij Anderlecht die dit seizoen hun kans kregen. De sterke aanvaller greep de eerste kans die hij kreeg door in de topper tegen Club Brugge te scoren.

Colassin is momenteel aan het herstellen van een blessure, maar laat aan RSCA TV weten dat alles goed verloopt. "Ik begin wat meer mobiliteit te krijgen. Door de coronacrisis heb ik wat meer tijd gekregen om te rusten. Ik herstel goed van de blessure."

Colassin gaf ook wat meer prijs over zijn toekomst. "Ik denk enkel en alleen aan Anderlecht. Ik wil enkel voor Anderlecht spelen en vele prijzen winnen. Daar doe je het uiteindelijk voor."

De jonge aanvaller van Anderlecht kreeg in het verleden al vaak lof over zijn voorbeeldige mentaliteit en professionele ingesteldheid en ook nu laat de 19-jarige zien over een goede kop te beschikken.

SPFL says no evidence of wrongdoing as Rangers release dossier

Rangers said they would "not be bullied into silence" as they released a dossier Thursday to support their case for an independent investigation into the handling of a controversial vote on ending the Scottish season.

But the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) said the Glasgow giants were yet to provide a "single shred of evidence" to support claims of corruption, bullying and coercion.

Rangers need 32 clubs to back their call for an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the recent vote, which ended the seasons below the Premiership.

The leagues were decided on a points-per-game basis and the SPFL board has the authority to end the top-flight campaign using the same formula if it cannot be completed.

Rangers had called for SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster and legal adviser Rod McKenzie to be suspended, saying they had received "alarming" evidence from a whistleblower and that clubs were bullied into voting for the SPFL plan.

Rangers presented their case on Thursday, ahead of next Tuesday's extraordinary general meeting of the SPFL and it was quickly met with a strong response from the league.

"At last, Rangers have issued their 'dossier' and we will now take time to review it, before responding to all 42 clubs," said an SPFL spokesman.

He added: "However, an initial examination of their 'dossier' has failed to identify a single shred of evidence to support Rangers' vociferous claims of corruption, bullying and coercion by SPFL staff."

Rangers were 13 points adrift of leaders Celtic when the season was suspended in March due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Celtic would be awarded a record-equalling ninth consecutive title if the SPFL board deemed no more games could be played this season.

Germany's Bundesliga is due to return in mid-May and there are encouraging signs that leagues in Spain and England could restart next month.

But the cost of testing and a lack of gate receipts are understood to be major obstacles in the way of a restart for Scottish football.

"The Scottish Premiership doesn't have £10 million ($12 million) to devote simply to testing," Scottish Football Association president Rod Petrie told the BBC this week.

"Your middle-ranking Scottish Premiership club might get four times the money through the gate as it does through its TV contract so the economics (of closed-doors games) don't work in Scotland."

Korean 'Monster' Kim censured for China football barbs

South Korea international Kim Min-jae apologised to his club Beijing Guoan but still faces "severe" punishment over remarks about his teammates, Chinese media said on Wednesday.

The central defender, who was linked with Watford before moving to the Chinese Super League (CSL) last year, was at the centre of controversy in China following the comments to Korean television.

The strapping 23-year-old, nicknamed "Monster", said that he was often "exhausted" by having to make up for the defensive deficiencies of his team-mates.

Kim also said that he did not know the name of Beijing's coach, the Frenchman Bruno Genesio.

The remarks, which went viral on Chinese social media, were taken as a general criticism of the quality of Chinese football and were roundly condemned.

Last year's CSL runners-up Beijing contacted Kim to make clear their unhappiness and he consequently made a verbal and written apology, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Kim feels that he is the victim of selective editing during the recent interview, state media say, but that is unlikely to be the end of the matter.

"Although he is in South Korea, Kim Min-jae understands the negative impact of this matter and realises that he made a mistake," the state-run Youth Daily said.

"On the morning of May 5 (Tuesday), he sent a written apology to the club through an interpreter.

"He will also speak to his team-mates to resolve possible misunderstandings and is willing to accept all penalties from the club."

Kim, who has 30 caps for South Korea and was reportedly on Premier League Watford's radar before moving to Beijing, will "definitely be punished severely", said the Youth Daily.

The February 22 start of the new CSL season was indefinitely postponed in January because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The campaign could now begin in late June or early July.
