Khashoggi's fiancee urges Premier League to block Saudi Newcastle takeover

The fiancee of murdered dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi wrote on Tuesday to the Premier League warning that a Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle United would "tarnish" the reputation of the competition.
Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor and US resident, was killed in 2018 while at Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul to obtain paperwork ahead of his wedding to Hatice Cengiz.
Turkish officials say a 15-man Saudi squad strangled him and cut his body into pieces. His remains were never found.
Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, will reportedly take an 80-percent stake in Newcastle should a proposed £300 million ($373 million) takeover be approved by the Premier League.
But lawyers for Cengiz said in a letter on her behalf that the Premier League should block the takeover.
"It is undoubtedly the right, proper and lawful action for you (chief executive Richard Masters) and the Premier League to take, especially in light of the ruthless killing of Ms Cengiz's fiance," the letter said.
"There should be no place in the Premier League, and English football, for anyone involved in such abhorrent acts."
The letter added: "The standing of both the Premiership and English football in general would be tarnished by your connection with those who commit the most appalling crimes and then seek to whitewash them, and who seek to use English football as a way of improving their image and hiding their transgressions."
A Saudi court in December sentenced five people to death over the killing, handing three others long jail sentences and acquitting the remaining three charged in the case.
However, rights group Amnesty International condemned the outcome as a "whitewash".
The two top figures investigated over the killing -- both part of the crown prince's inner circle -- were exonerated.
Both the CIA and a United Nations special envoy have directly linked the crown prince to the killing, a charge the kingdom vehemently denies.
Critics have accused the Newcastle takeover bid as the latest example of Saudi "sports washing".
In recent months the country has hosted a world title heavyweight boxing clash between Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz and the Spanish Super Cup.
The Premier League must determine whether the bid fulfils its owners and directors' test.
Oliver Dowden, the UK culture secretary, told a meeting of the Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee last week it was a "matter for the Premier League" rather than government.
Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) has not publicly commented on the deal.

La Liga set for individual training return on May 4

Spain's professional athletes including La Liga players can restart basic training from May 4, the country's government announced on Tuesday.
The Spanish top-flight has been on hold since March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the decision was the first move in lifting lockdown measures which will be done in four stages across two months.
"The first phase, or phase 0, is the preparation to transition phase or the de-escalation phase, which we are already in," Sanchez said.
"In the best-case scenario, this de-escalation phase will take a minimum of six weeks and the maximum duration we want to see is eight weeks for the whole of Spain," he added.
Only later in later stages of the process will full sessions be able to take place.
The announcement allows the league's clubs to restart individual sessions with their squad members, a protocol agreed upon by La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation earlier this month.
According to local reports players will have to undergo COVID-19 screening tests before returning to training.
They will have to arrive at their club's facilities already in kit, with gloves and masks, and only a maximum of six players can be on the pitch at the same time.
COVID-19 has claimed nearly 24,000 lives in the country, behind the United States and Italy in mortality rates from the virus.

Ligue 1 season 'over' for FFF chief Le Graet

French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet said on Tuesday he thinks the Ligue 1 season is over due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe had announced the competition could not resume until September.
France's sports ministry told AFP after Philippe's speech that sports fixtures could not take place even behind closed doors before the end of July, leaving open the possibility that some matches could still be played in August.
"We informed the executive board, what it already knew, that Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 will not start, that the National (third tier) will not start or the Women's D1 either," Le Graet told Brittanny-based newspaper Le Telegramme.
"These four competitions are definitively over for the 2019-2020 season," he added.
The French league (LFP), which runs the top flight and the second tier, which have been on hold due to the COVID-19 outbreak since mid-March, are meeting on Thursday to draw its conclusions from the government's announcement.
The FFF said later they had asked the LFP to finish the two league seasons.
Le Graet said two sides instead of three will be promoted from Ligue 2 with the same amount of clubs going in the opposite direction.

Pardew to leave ADO Den Haag after Eredivisie cancellation

English manager Alan Pardew will leave ADO Den Haag after the Dutch league season was scrapped, the Eredivisie club announced on Tuesday.
The 58-year-old's contract was due to expire at the end of the 2019/20 season, which was declared null and void last week due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Former Newcastle, West Ham and Crystal Palace boss Pardew joined Den Haag with the club struggling to avoid relegation and managed just one win from eight matches in charge.
"The roads of ADO Den Haag and Alan Pardew are going to separate," the club said in a statement.
"Assistant coaches Chris Powell and Paul Butler, whose contracts are also due to expire, will not return."
Den Haag were spared potential relegation from the top flight as they sat seven points from safety when the league was ended with eight matches remaining.
It was Pardew's first job since leaving West Brom in April 2018.

FIFA proposes five substitutes when play resumes

FIFA said on Monday it is proposing five substitutions per match when football resumes, to help players cope with the increase in the number of games.
The world governing body has sent its proposal to the International Board (IFAB), the guardian of the laws of the game, which has to approve it before it can be implemented by national leagues, a FIFA spokesman said.
"When the competition resumes, the calendars will be overloaded with a higher than usual number of matches," he said.
"The safety of the players is one of FIFA's priorities. One of the concerns is that the high frequency of matches may increase the potential risk of injuries," he added.
To address these concerns, FIFA has made a proposal to the IFAB to "temporarily relax Law 3 of the game to allow for a greater number of substitutions. Each team could make five substitutions during regulation time plus a sixth substitution during overtime."
The proposal would need to be studied quickly by the IFAB as some leagues are planning to resume after stopping play because of the coronavirus pandemic in early May.
The measure could remain in force throughout the 2020-2021 season and also apply "in theory" during next summer's European championships, according to a source close to FIFA.
"If this measure is validated by the board, each league and each body will be able to decide whether or not to apply it and in the competitions of its choice," added the FIFA spokesman.

Reals Trumpf: goldene Leih-Armee

Achraf Hakimi (ausgeliehen an: Borussia Dortmund, Marktwert: 54 Millionen Euro)
Martin Ödegaard (Real Sociedad, 45 Mio.)
Dani Ceballos (FC Arsenal, 32 Mio.)
Sergio Reguilón (FC Sevilla, 20 Mio.)
Álvaro Odriozola (FC Bayern, 16 Mio.)
Takefusa Kubo (RCD Mallorca, 13,5 Mio.)
Óscar Rodriguez (CD Leganés, 11 Mio.)
Borja Mayoral (UD Levante, 3,2 Mio.)
Andriy Lunin (Real Oviedo, 2,7 Mio.)
Alberto Soro (Real Saragossa, 2,7 Mio.)
Jorge de Frutos (Rayo Vallecano, 2 Mio.)
Luca Zidane (Racing Santander, 1,8 Mio.)
