Arabian Gulf League: Al Nasr on the right path, says coach

Jurcic relieved with full points after slender win over Khor Fakkan in AGL

Dubai: Al Nasr coach Krunoslav Jurcic was relieved sighting a better future for his side especially against lower-placed teams in the Arabian Gulf League (AGL).
Now played behind closed doors, Al Nasr had to bank on a 64th-minute goal from Brazilian Glauber Sequeira Lima to pick up full points against the visiting Khor Fakkan late on Friday. Until that strike that goal, the visitors had matched Al Nasr, except for a bleak moment in the 57th minute when substitute Gabriel Valentini Da Silva was denied by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after a handball inside the area.
But, Al Nasr kept possession – 64 per cent by the final whistle – and got a much-needed goal that handed them full points along with a belief that they can win against so-called weaker teams. This season, Al Nasr has seemingly struggled against such teams.
The men in blue have lost both their home and away encounters against Al Dhafra and Ajman, while also going down by a solitary goal against Bani Yas to stand sixth in the 14-team standings with 31 points. Coach Jurcic – a member of the Croatian national team that won third place at the 1998 Fifa World Cup in France – was aware of his team’s fragility against weaker sides.

“We were aware that this match against Khor Fakkan would be a difficult one for us, simply because we don’t play such opponents who defend stoutly near their box and then bounce on quick counter-attacks. But, tonight we proved we had the patience to wait for that elusive goal, and at the end we have three very important points,” Jurcic said.

“No doubt, we have a problem with this type of teams, and honestly we never had a solution on how to find a way past such a team till our win tonight. The important thing for us is that we have managed to break this trend and find a way to three points that we fully deserved,” he added.
Jurcic, who took over as the Al Nasr coach in mid-season in October last year, has seen his team play entertaining football while notching wins against the bigger teams such as Al Wahda, Al Jazira, and more recently, defending champions Sharjah.
“Patience was the key no doubt, and I am proud of my players as they waited for their chance. We found a way to get the three points and that’s a huge positive at the end of the day for the future,” Jurcic stressed.
Khor Fakkan coach Goran Tufegdzic was not too ruffled at having his team’s five-match unbeaten streak coming to an end. “The loss really doesn’t bother me too much as it is normal to lose a match. I am really happy with the way my players, especially the defence, responded. They showed a lot of discipline, and maybe we should have had a better result tonight,” Tufegdzic said.
“We need to target a better future while learning the lessons of tonight. The main aim, of course, is to remain in the league, and for this to happen, we need to follow this same route. We have another seven matches and that means we have another 21 points to play for. We will continue working towards our goal,” he promised.

Omar Abdulrahman pulls the strings as Al Jazira inflict heavy defeat on his former club Al Ain

UAE playmaker on target in 3-1 win played out in front of a virtually empty Mohamed bin Zayed Stadium

One of the most significant matches in the UAE football season played out to an almost empty stadium on Saturday night.

Players and managers provided the soundtrack, every cry or call audible, every thud of the tackle or block of the ball perceptible to the few in attendance.

And so it is for the moment, as football continues to grapple with the novel coronavirus. To its credit, the Arabian Gulf League remains one of the only divisions around the world that has sustained, part of a directive from the Football Association that has permitted matches to maintain, albeit without the presence of supporters.
The current situation has produced an increasingly difficult one to navigate throughout football, evidenced hours before kick-off between Al Jazira and Al Ain in Abu Dhabi, when the Saudi Arabia government announced the suspension of all sport in the kingdom. For the moment at least, the Saudi Professional League ceases to run.

Across the Gulf, on an uncharacteristically sedate night in the UAE capital, the top flight’s second-placed team battled the side who headed into the weekend in third. The prize? To narrow Shabab Al Ahli’s advantage at the summit.
In the end, Jazira prevailed, courtesy of a late double, helped no doubt by the fact Al Ain had to play the final 20 minutes with 10 men. A 3-1 home triumph shook up the race for the title.
To be fair, Jazira should have twice taken the lead early on, but for Ali Mabkhout’s miscalculation in front of goal. The UAE’s master marksman – he sits proudly as his national team’s all-time leading scorer – the striker lashed his first effort wide with only Khalid Essa in the Al Ain goal to beat. Only minutes had elapsed. Mabkhout screamed in anger.
It would not get much better for him. On 22 minutes, Jazira playmaker Omar Abdulrahman released Kenno with another clever flick, setting the Brazilian clear of the Al Ain defence. He squared to Mabkhout, who fell over the ball as he stood in front of Essa. Marcel Keizer, the Jazira manager, could barely contain his frustration.
Six minutes before the break, disappointment for the hosts turned to despair. Bandar Al Ahbabi strode forward down the right and crossed for Kodjo Laba, who gratefully headed home past Ali Kasheif from close range.
It kept up a seasonal trend: Al Ahbabi edged further clear at the top of the assist charts, with 12. Laba, typically delighting in tandem with his creator-in-chief, notched his 18th of the campaign. It has been some debut season for the Togo international.

Bandar Al Ahbabi assist, Kodjo Laba goal. As close to an guarantee as you can get.

Yet Laba’s joy was short-lived. Almost immediately, Jazira had pegged Al Ain back. It fell to a former favourite to do it – the favourite – when Abdulrahman met Kennos’s centre to tap home on the visitors' goalline.
The UAE star did not celebrate, raising his arms in near-apology. Clearly, he deemed his hugely decorated decade in Al Ain purple demanded it.
Abdulrahman played some part in his old side's reduction to 10 men. Early in the second half, he was on the receiving end of Al Ahbabi's mistimed challenge, prompting a yellow card.
With 20 minutes remaining, Al Ahbabi collected his second, although it did seem harsh. Contesting a high ball with Kenno, a flailing arm caught his rival in the face, prompting the referee's red. The Al Ain winger pleaded his innocence as he was dragged from the action, but it changed little.
A man to the good, Jazira stole it late on. Abdulrahman’s corner was only half-cleared, the ball looped to Kenno, who volleyed it beyond Essa. Blending belief with creative bent, it was an effort worthy of settling any encounter. In Injury-time, Mabkhout finally finished, speeding away from the Al Ain defence to drill home.
Jazira were the victors, closing out a curious contest in the capital. They sit one behind Al Ain in the standings, seven back from Shabab Al Ahli. With that, a late run at the title appeared wholly plausible once more.

Pacesetters Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club can expect a stern examination of their Arabian Gulf League title credentials when they welcome Alvaro Negredo’s Al Nasr on Friday.
The ‘Match of the Week’ at Rashid Stadium will provide a repeat of January’s engrossing Arabian Gulf Cup final, won 2-1 by the Blue Wave, plus a stern examination of the hosts’ powers of recovery. Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s men downed Bani Yas 1-0 last weekend to end a five-match winless run in all competitions and conserve a five-point top-flight lead.
Nasr, themselves, also struggled after the showpiece. Last Thursday’s emphatic 3-0 slaying of Al Wahda by the seventh-placed side ended a four-match winless streak of their own.
“We are ready for our mission against Al Nasr,” said Arruabarrena, about a match-week 18 fixture that will be played without supporters in attendance as a precautionary measure because of the coronavirus outbreak.
“I am not worried about any confrontation with any team and focus is our weapon in the matches.”

Meanwhile, new Fujairah boss Fabio Viviani has declared his relegation-threatened troops are not haunted by Al Ain’s previous seven-goal mauling.
Prolific Togo striker Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba helped himself to four goals in October’s 7-1 triumph, which, curiously, witnessed the Wolves take the early lead. Madjid Bougherra was in charge then, but the Rangers and Algeria legend was replaced last month.
Viviani, 53, must now inspire a repeat of the great escape he engineered last term at Ittihad Kalba. The scale of this task was evidenced in last week’s disappointing debut, a 1-0 loss at his former employers that extended an AGL winless run to seven.
“The defeat by seven is a thing of the past,” said the ex-AC Milan midfielder ahead of Thursday’s trip to second-placed opposition. “What we care about is how to overcome this hurdle.”
A match with serious connotations at both ends of the table will be played out on Thursday when champions Sharjah welcome promoted Hatta.
The King find themselves third after an upturn in form and could hand a first start since December 2019 to recuperated Foreign Player of the Year Igor Coronado, while their immediate opponents’ 3-0 beating by Al Ain dropped them into the bottom two.
Host tactician Abdulaziz Al Anbari was excited about the return of his sensational Brazilian playmaker.
He said: “I congratulate the team for their focus, and I hope that Igor’s return will be a strong addition for us.”
Khor Fakkan are full of “confidence” ahead of Thursday’s visit of Bani Yas.
The promoted side shocked Al Jazira 1-0 last week and crept out of the relegation places. They will also play their first home game of the season at the redeveloped Saqr bin Mohammad al Qassimi Stadium.
“Khor Fakkan prepared well for this match after defeating Al Jazira,” said coach Goran Tufegdzic. “This result increased the players’ confidence in themselves.”
Al Dhafra could gate-crash the top three if they defeat spiralling Al Wasl on Thursday and results elsewhere go their way. Jazira and Wahda need strong responses on Friday when they meet Kalba and Ajman, respectively.
