After a very respectable four wins in six road matches, LAFC are ready for a housewarming party and will christen Banc of California Stadium against Seattle Sounders FC, who will be hungry to spoil the party and avenge a season-opening 1-0 loss at CenturyLink Field.

LAFC closed out their season-opening road trip with a come-from-behind 5-3 win over the 10-man Montreal Impact, while the Sounders snapped a four-match winless streak to beat Minnesota United FC, 3-1, Sunday at home.

In the first-ever meeting between LAFC and Seattle, Diego Rossi struck for the game’s lone goal in the 11th minute and Tyler Miller made seven saves against his former club in the historic victory.

LAFC

Apparently, Bob Bradley’s side likes to do things in twos. After opening the season with consecutive wins followed by back-to-back defeats, LAFC won their second in a row Saturday by spoiling the Impact’s opener at Stade Saputo.

Benny Feilhaber, Carlos Vela and Latif Blessing found the back of the net as part of a four-goal explosion after halftime for LAFC, which benefitted from a Jukka Raitala own goal. Laurent Ciman also had a special return to Montreal, scoring against his former club in the 24th minute as LAFC rallied from a pair of two-goal deficits as a result of an Ignacio Piatti hat trick.

“In these six games, we’ve had periods of good football,” Bradley said after the game. “We still have other moments when things get away from us, but the starting point is pretty good.”

Seattle Sounders FC

It took a bit longer than anyone expected, but Seattle Sounders FC (1-3-1) finally picked up their first MLS win of 2018, a much-needed 3-1 victory over Minnesota United FC Sunday.

Gustav Svensson and Will Bruin scored two minutes apart to stake the Rave Green an early advantage and Jordy Delem’s first MLS goal deep into second-half stoppage time allowed the fans to finally exhale and celebrate the victory.

Brian Schmetzer made three changes to his starting XI that played Sporting Kansas City to a 2-2 draw the previous week. Kelvin Leerdam returned from suspension to start at right back, Osvaldo Alonso, who was named to the MLS Team of the Week presented by Audi for Week 8, made his first start after coming back from injury, and Alex Roldan earned his second start in the midfield alongside his brother Cristian.

Not starting, though, was Clint Dempsey, who came off the bench for the final 30 minutes and set up Delem’s insurance marker.

Schmetzer wasn’t quite ready to dub Dempsey a super sub, but also understands it’s not a role the veteran would embrace.

“I don’t think Clint Dempsey is ok with anything but starting and scoring goals,” Schmetzer said. “That’s what he’s done his entire career.”

A week ago this was shaping up to a battle of the final two unbeaten teams in Major League Soccer. While FC Dallas lived up to their end of the bargain, knocking off the Philadelphia Union, 2-0, New York City FC suffered their first defeat of 2018, falling 3-0 to the Portland Timbers.

Not only are NYCFC looking to bounce back from their first loss, but they are also looking for their first victory against Dallas. The Toros Tejanos are 1W-2D in their first three games against the Cityzens, per Opta.

NYCFC

NYCFC (5-1-2) had their seven-match unbeaten streak snapped at Providence Park, with Patrick Vieira’s squad failing to match the Timbers' intensity and falling into a two-goal deficit inside the opening 40 minutes before Larrys Mabiala put the match away with a 66th-minute insurance goal.

NYCFC had nearly 75 percent of possession, but they only forced Jeff Attinella into three saves.

“I think it was really difficult for us,” Vieira said after the match. “They were defending quite well. They executed their game plan well. We were really vulnerable in the counterattack. With the quality of players they have, they scored three goals, but overall it was a really difficult game for us to find space.”

Vieira made four changes from the side that tied Atlanta United away the previous week, bringing Ronald Matarrita in for Ben Sweat at left back, choosing Ebenezer Ofori and Rodney Wallace for Yangel Herrera and Jesus Medina, respectively, while David Villa returned to the starting XI for the first time since a 2-1 win over the LA Galaxy on March 11.

FC Dallas

Slowly, but surely, FC Dallas (3-0-3) are working their way through the Eastern Conference. A week after handing the New England Revolution a rare loss at Gillette Stadium, FC Dallas knocked off the Philadelphia Union, 2-0, Saturday in Frisco.

Mauro Diaz and Maxi Urruti both came off the substitute’s bench to score 10 minutes apart in the second half, while Jimmy Maurer needed to make just two saves to extend FC Dallas’ goalless streak to 208 minutes.

Oscar Pareja made two changes to his starting XI from the side that defeated the Revs the week prior, with Santiago Mosquera starting on the left wing and Roland Lamah moving up front in place of Urruti.

Matt Hedges was named to the MLS Team of the Week presented by Audi for Week 8.

“I’m very content in the performance, but mostly because I see a team that is gelling together,” Pareja said after the game. “That makes us happy.”

They lost their goalkeeper to a red card and then they lost their first game since Week 1 and the Colorado Rapids will be hungry to rebound from a 3-0 loss to Rocky Mountain rival Real Salt Lake.

But it will not be easy. Orlando City SC comes to Colorado on a high, having won four straight, including a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday.

The Lions are unbeaten in all three league matches against the Rapids (2W-0L-1D). They have yet to allow a goal to Colorado, per Opta.

Colorado Rapids

The Colorado Rapids (2-2-2) were on the wrong end of a pair of Video Review decisions last Saturday. The first, Tim Howard handling the ball outside of the box on a break by Jefferson Savarino after 20 minutes, resulted in the US international being sent off.

The second, a handball called on Tommy Smith inside the box, led to Joao Plata’s pivotal penalty kick in the 82nd minute. That opened the floodgates for RSL, who tacked on two more goals in the final seconds to capture the first leg of the 2018 Rocky Mountain Cup.

Now the focus shifts to a tough Orlando City SC team led by in-form striker Dom Dwyer and the influential Yoshi Yotun in the midfield, someone Colorado coach Anthony Hudson said he knows well from the qualifying playoff between New Zealand and Peru when he was coaching the Kiwis.

“It’s another tough test, they’re a good team, on a good run, they have some very good attacking players,” Hudson said. “We’re clear about how they play and what they want to do, but nothing changes for us. The result on Saturday hasn’t dented any confidence.”

Orlando City SC

Break up the Lions!

Orlando City SC (4-2-1) has raced up to third in the Eastern Conference thanks to four consecutive wins, including a 3-2 victory over San Jose on Saturday.

Chris Mueller extended a personal goal-scoring streak to three straight games when he put the Lions in front in the second minute. Sacha Kljestan struck in the 35th minute and Dwyer added the 100th of his professional career (69') to all but put the game away, sans a few late nervy moments because of a Florian Jungwirth brace.

Led by Dwyer and Mueller, who was named to the MLS Team of the Week presented by Audi, the Lions have scored 12 goals during the four-match winning streak.

“We made a lot of changes in the offseason and it took a while for us to get used to each other, a few games to get Into a rhythm,” Dwyer said. “We’re hitting stride now and we’re feeling confident. We’re staying at the same level right now. We’ve got to continue to work hard, try and keep this run going and get a result in Colorado.”
