After days of ongoing negotiations, according to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have completed a move for Valencia midfielder Ferran Torres. Valencia will receive an initial fee of £27 million which could rise with eventual add ons.
Manchester City Complete Ferran Torres Deal
Torres – The First of Many Manchester City Summer Deals?
After missing out on the Premier League title by an astounding 18 points in the season just gone, Manchester City will be keen to ensure the swift retaking of their crown next season. Pep Guardiola will be aware, however, that without substantial recruitment, catching Liverpool will be a tough task once again. Substantial recruitment that looks likely to begin with Ferran Torres’ arrival.
With Nathan Ake also reportedly close to swapping Bournemouth for the sky blue colours of Manchester City, too, it is clear that securing reinforcements is the main priority at the Etihad this summer.
Torres Deal a Worry For Phil Foden?
Upon David Silva’s departure, many rightfully named Phil Foden as the heir to the Spaniards soon vacant throne. Yet, with the Ferran Torres deal reportedly sealed and inevitably delivered, Foden’s place in the Guardiola’s plans comes into question once more.
Foden holds clear traits to replace Silva; silky dribbling, fine finishing, and an eye for an excellent pass. Though, despite being the perfect candidate, the arrival of Torres, who holds all too similar traits, could keep the academy graduate out of the side again. If Foden wants to play on either side of Manchester City’s attacking trio, as he has done on occasion this season, then outperforming Torres must be a priority.
The Beginning of a Dynamic Duo?
Alternatively, with David Silva out of the picture, Foden could find himself in the centre of midfield, meaning a partnership rather than a battle could be on the cards with Torres. With both 20-year-olds on the pitch, Manchester City could find themselves best positioned to reach the summit of English football once again.
The Torres deal certainly fits into Guardiola’s plans for both the present and the future of the club and looks likely to be the first of many incomings this summer.
