New Palermo Coach Eugenio Corini has an extraordinarily tough debut away to fired up Fiorentina.
The Viola come into this game having being on the wrong end of a six-goal thriller with Inter this past Monday. Fiorentina down to 10 men did manage to scare the Nerazzurri, who had raced into a 3-0 lead early on by clawing back two goals, only to see their hopes dashed once Inter grabbed a fourth.
That result marked the first time Paulo Sousa’s men had lost a match since early October against Torino. Moreover, it effectively ended a curious pattern that had seen them draw, then win, then draw again for the past six matches.
Drawing appears to be one of the frustrating things afflicting Fiorentina this season. With five so far heading into Week 15, that means 10 valuable points dropped. Recording a stalemate with Atalanta – especially given how surprisingly strong La Dea have been this term – is not the worst that could happen. But throwing away two valuable points against bottom of the table Crotone surely did not sit well with fans.
That being said, there’s no need to cry over an already earned bad result. Fiorentina are now taking on Palermo, a team who have not won a match since September 21, when they edged out Atalanta 1-0 on the road.
The Rosanero currently are on a seven-match losing streak and there appears to be no end to their misery. Palermo have yet to win a home fixture this term and in fact, that win against La Dea still to date is their only victory this term. They are propping up the table with Crotone and crashed out of the Coppa Italia this week to Serie B side Spezia.
Given that bad run of form, it’s quite surprising that club president Maurizio Zamparini kept Roberto De Zerbi in charge for so long. True to form, however, the eccentric coach finally made some changes and brought in Corini.
It’s just December and Palermo are on their third Coach, but that is par for the course for the Rosanero. The question is, will Corini be able to help them achieve what would be a remarkable turnaround to salvage this season?
To make things even more difficult for him, he goes into this debut without suspended Alessandro Diamanti, Edoardo Goldaniga and Giancarlo Gonzalez, while Bruno Henrique is in doubt after fracturing his hand.
Keep an eye on: Ilija Nestorovski (Palermo) - The Macedonian has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismally performing Palermo side. With seven goals, he’s also responsible for 70 per cent of the team’s total output.
