Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid Match Preview
Real Madrid are slowly clawing their way back to the top of football hierarchy. And it’s happening at the best possible time for them, considering the struggles Barcelona are going through right now.
A title in this scenario would be the apt way to pile on Barca’s misery. Moreover, it will also be the perfect push required for Zinedine Zidane’s men to go after another Champions League medal.
But Atleti will surely conjure up some road block. They too are on the rise, after an uninspiring start to their season. At one point, they were not even in the hunt for a top-four spot in the La Liga, but now they are just five points off the top-most position.
A Super Cup triumph after beating Barcelona in the semis, and Real in the final would be nothing short of a fairy tale for their loyal fans.
Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid Prediction
Real Madrid had taken on Valencia in the semi-final, and comprehensively recorded a 3-1 victory to progress to the final. Their dream trio of Isco, Luka Modric, and Toni Kroos found the back of the net for the Royal Whites.
In the meantime, Atleti took the harder route of locking horns with Barcelona in the semis. In a game that swung in either direction, Diego Simeone’s men scored two goals in the final ten minutes to complete a 2-3 comeback over Lionel Messi and his boys.
As things stand this Sunday, goals are expected from both teams. Not only are they two of the best teams in the country, or maybe even in the world, but they hold a severely competitive spirit against each other as well.
These teams would choose losing 5-0 to a minnow, rather than be held to a draw in the Madrid derby.
On top of that, both squads are red-hot in form. Zidane’s men are unbeaten in their last 15 games in a row, and have lost just twice from their previous twenty-nine attempts.
Atleti meanwhile, are on a five-game winning run, and have lost just thrice in their last twenty-two match-ups. Two of those were in the Champions League, against Juventus, and Bayer Leverkusen, while the third was against Barca in the league.
In addition, Real have scored two or more goals in nine of their prior twelve fixtures, and Atleti have done so in their previous five games on the trot. Moreover, the prior five h2h encounters combinedly produced 20 goals.
Also, as mentioned earlier, considering Barca’s struggles, whoever wins the Super Cup will gain a major moral upper hand in going after the league title, and will help their CL campaign as well.
Suffice it to say, we are in line for a fierce encounter, with both teams aggressively trying to gain the edge. By all means, expect goals from both these squads.
However, in regards to result, Real Madrid hold a slight superiority. The first reason would be, their overall form this season has been far ahead than that of Atleti. If not for some unluck, Real would easily have been at the top in league standings.
In the case of Atleti – yeah, they are on a winning run right now, but do take into consideration their return of mere one win from eight games just this past December.
In addition, Simeone’s men have always come up short against their derby rivals, in serious cup competitions. The wounds of two CL final losses in three years are still fresh in the minds of the Colchoneros.
Into the mix, consider the extra day of rest for Real, and their comparatively easier semi final match against Valencia, in opposition to Atleti’s hard-fought win against Barca.
And finally, the overall stature of Real, and the fear-factor they still hold, are in a totally different league in comparison to Atletico Madrid.
Considering these observations, it’s expected that Real Madrid should record a narrow and tough-fought win this Sunday.
