In a dead rubber Champions League match, Jose Mourinho plans to rotate.
A lot of Tottenham Hotspur players have put in a lot of minutes since Jose Mourinho took over as head coach, but it looks as though at least one of them is set for a mid-week breather.
Speaking in his press conference after Tottenham’s 5-0 smashing of Burnley today, Mourinho said that he plans to rest his star striker Harry Kane for this Wednesday’s dead rubber Champions League match at Bayern Munich. Asked a question about Premier League debutant Troy Parrott and whether he’d feature against the German champions, here’s Mourinho’s response.
Resting Kane is both smart and necessary. Kane has played virtually every minute of all four of Mourinho’s matches as Spurs head coach, and while he’s the kind of player who wants to play every single minute he possibly can, there’s absolutely no reason to risk him in this kind of a match.
Bayern and Tottenham have both already qualified for the next round of the Champions League, with Bayern confirmed as group winners. There’s literally no reason why both Spurs and Bayern can’t roll out the U21 squads for this match, though I don’t expect that they will. However, it provides a great opportunity to give players such as Parrott, Juan Foyth, Kyle Walker-Peters, Oliver Skipp, and Giovani Lo Celso a good run-out. If Erik Lamela is back from injury and ready for some minutes, it’s a good way to ease him back into action as well.
Spurs may lose the match, but who cares? This is a glorified scrimmage now, so why not run out the reserves and let Jose see what they can do? Kane gets rested for this coming weekend’s match at Wolves, and everyone’s happy. Except maybe Kane, who will miss out on an opportunity to run up his Champions League goal tally, but he’ll live.
