Barcelona are eyeing a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen this summer. According to recent reports, the Catalans are ready to make a move for the Danish midfield enforcer when the transfer window opens in the summer. It is believed that Ernesto Valverde’s team are on the lookout for a new midfielder in this summer transfer period who can replace Andres Iniesta at the heart of their midfield.
The Spanish legend is being touted to leave the Catalans at the end of the current campaign with a move to China being mentioned in the papers. Some sources are claiming that Eriksen is high on Barca’s wish-list as they seek to find a worthy replacement who can fill the boots of Iniesta in the coming years.
The Danish international has put in some mesmerizing performances for Spurs during the course of this season which led to him being rewarded with a place in the PFA Team of the Year on Wednesday. However, they are not the only ones chasing after Eriksen with Manchester United and Real Madrid also keeping tabs on the Danish playmaker ahead of a potential move in the summer.
Barca are currently cruising towards another La Liga title with a tally of 83 points in 33 matches. The Catalan side are 12 points above second-placed Atletico Madrid, having played a game more with just 5 matches remaining in this campaign. It looks highly likely that they are going to earn another top-flight title in the coming weeks. However, they suffered a major setback when they were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by AS Roma earlier this month.
The addition of Eriksen will undoubtedly bolster Ernesto Valverde’s midfield options ahead of the new season and help them establish their dominance in both domestic and European competitions. Barcelona have the likes of Andres Iniesta, Phillipe Coutinho, Paulinho, Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Sergi Roberto and Andre Gomes vying for a place in Valverde’s first-team. The potential signing of Eriksen will definitely add more competition for places in the Barca squad.
However, Spurs can’t afford to lose a player of Eriksen’s talents as it would leave them with a huge void to fill ahead of the new campaign. Eriksen is highly versatile and can operate in a number of different positions across the midfield. He primarily plays as an attacking midfielder but can also operate on either flank which makes him an ideal asset under Mauricio Pochettino at the Wembley Stadium. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the Denmark international and whether he ends up making a switch out of North London this summer.
