Swiss football club BSC Young Boys has signed up biotech business CSL Behring as its new stadium sponsor.
The agreement will commence in the middle of 2020 and will run until 2025, with an option to add a further five years.
Under the deal, the club’s ground will be renamed the Wankdorf Stadium after 15 years of being called the Stade De Suisse.
This has been a long-standing aim of the club and was made possible by CSL Behring waiving the option to be incorporated within the venue’s name.
CSL Behring will pay an annual seven-figure fee for the sponsorship, according to the Berner Zeitung.
Pierre Caloz, responsible for the company’s production sites in Europe and Asia Pacific, offered further explanation to this decision. He said: “The return of the name Stadion Wankdorf has great emotional value for us: CSL Behring has been anchored in the Wankdorf district for 70 years.’’
The original Wankdorf Stadium was the club’s home until its demolition in 2001. The Stade De Suisse was built on the site in the Wankdorf quarter of Bern and opened in 2005.
The original stadium is best known for hosting the final of the 1954 Fifa World Cup, a match won 3-2 by West Germany against favourites Hungary.
