Flamengo midfielder Gerson comments on future amid reported Tottenham bid

Flamengo midfielder Gerson has told Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte that he sees his future with his current club, despite reports of a £16million offer from Tottenham Hotspur in recent weeks.
Gerson, 23, has returned to his native Brazil with Flamengo after a difficult spell in Italy with Roma. Indeed, the holding midfielder has reinvigorated his blossoming career – helping Flamengo win the Copa Libertadores.
Goal claimed in June that Tottenham had tabled an offer in the region of £16million to sign Gerson, whose form has even seen him touted to win his first Brazil cap – when international fixtures resume in the coming months.

But Gerson has thrown a spanner in Tottenham’s reported plans to lure the Brazilian to north London, by stating he is happy at Flamengo and sees his future with the Brazilian side – rather than returning to Europe.

“Today, with a year of Flamengo, I can guarantee that I have never talked to any other club. My focus is totally on Flamengo. I feel at home, I am happy,” Gerson stated.
“We cannot close doors, football shows that, but today I am very happy and fulfilled to be in my boyhood club. I met again here and I want to have even more achievements with this shirt.”

TBR’s view – Gerson would have been an excellent signing

A bit of steel, toughness is just what Tottenham need in central midfield. Gerson would have provided, but also an ounce of South American flair. Spurs can still add that strength and power in the form of another midfielder.
Indeed, Southampton ace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a similar kind of player to Gerson – and adding the Danish star to Jose Mourinhi’s squad would add a much-needed dimension to Spurs next season.
