Borussia Dortmund has reportedly shown interest in Juventus defender Mattia Caldara according to Di Marzio.
Borussia Dortmund has a pretty solid back-line at the moment with Abdou Diallo and Manuel Akanji. Omer Toprak and Zagadou are perfectly capable of allowing the duo rest and rotation. As such, this interest in Caldara is a little confusing. Ideally, the Italian center-half acts as a sweeper in a 3-man defense but is also capable of playing in a back-4
Juventus sent him on loan to Atalanta in a bid to allow him to develop and get regular minutes. This has really paid off and they’re now with two young, world-class defenders in him and Rugani. The latter could be moving to Chelsea but Caldara is considered unsellable.
Caldara is considered unsellable.
One of the possible reasons for this move could be the fact that Rugani has not really impressed much and Juventus still has sufficient defenders to fill the line. However, they need to balance the books after buying Cristiano Ronaldo for a club-record fee. Dortmund might also be experimenting with Diallo at left-back which could explain the interest in Caldara.
The offer made was reportedly for €35 million with 5 million in add-ons. Chelsea has made an offer for €30million. Dortmund could still entice Juventus into selling with a bigger offer. Their investment in Caldara has been very little and they stand to gain a lot with the right offer. However, since he’s just rejoined them, the offer being made, would have to be for a future move, or at best act as the foundation for future negotiations. It is highly unlikely that Juventus will sell him at this moment.
Dortmund may not need Caldara but he would be a good addition from a tactical point of view and that’s something one can’t measure with money.
